The UGI is done by having you swallow a liquid called barium. They

can then see the outline of your stomach and how the barium flows

into your intestines. Arterial blood gases is blood drawn from the

artery in your wrist to determine how well oxygenated your blood is.

The pulmonary function tests involve you breathing into all kinds of

machines, takes about 2 hours, to determine the health of your lungs.

At USC if you are able you do the treadmill, if you can't they induce

your heart to pump faster with drugs instead.

You really should inquire at your surgeon's office and they should provide a

handout of information since each surgeon varies on this. At Mt. Sinai, NYC

we were required to have a nutritional and psych consult, a pre-op endoscopy

(to rule out h-pylori bacteria and diagnose potential hiatus hernias or other

abnormalities). We also had to do a bunch of bloodwork including a liver

panel, endocrine studies (to rule out thyroid problems, I guess). I think

that's it as far as I can remember now...

Then, with pre-admissions testing we had an EKG, more bloodwork, a chest

x-ray and brief consult with a physician and anesthesiologist.

Oh, about the bowel prep: Some surgeons do not require it. I only had to

refrain from eating/drinking anything from midnight on the night before

surgery. :)
