My daughter Lilee has been in the P/M now for about 2 weeks. She is 3 1/2 months

old. I recently have noticed that her Clubfoot leg is longer than the other by

up to 1/2? inch. I am going to measure it tonight. Has anyone else expierenced

this? What was the outcome? The follow-up Dr. we have DID confirm ny suspishions

about this. He did Xrays and said her hips were normal, but he wants to do

another set of Xrays in about 2 more months. Any advice?

Have they done ultrasounds of her hips? At her age ultrasounds sometimes tell

them more than x-rays (the bones are still soft enough that everything doesn't

show up in x-rays). The first thing that comes to mind is a hip issue. I only

say that though because we have a daughter with bilateral congenital hip

dysplasia. Maybe get a second opinion, just to be safe. Hip issues are much

easier to fix the earlier they are caught!

They have only done Xrays. Should I go to another Orthopedic Surgeon for a 2nd

opinion? Or some other kind of Dr?

My Lily (now almost 8 months old) has been repeatedly

screened for hip dysplasia. She was breech and female,

so I guess that increases the risk. They did ultrasounds

until she was 4 months old & then did an x-ray. The Dr.

said that an x-ray isn't useful until about 4 months. Her

pediatric orthopedist (the same one who treats her cf)

is the doc who has done the screening. So I'd say that

until Lilee is 4 months (which she will be soon, right?),

an ultrasound will be better.

Incidentally, Lily will have her (hopefully) last x-ray to

rule out dysplasia on Tuesday. There is no asymmetry

when her hips are not stressed and only a very slight

asymmetry when they are stressed. Apparently there's

disagreement among the medical community about

whether the later case requires treatment. Both her

orthopedist & her pediatrician think she'll be just fine without

treatment. The x-ray on Tuesday is supposed to put

the nail in the coffin (since by 7-8 months the hip joint

is supposed to be fully developed). We don't notice

any clicking in her hips or difference in the lengths of her legs.

I will say that if the issue is not hip related, then the proceedure

for correction is the Ilizarov fixator, and isnt real nice. A heel

lift or specially made shoes will suffice. My husband has a 1/2 in

difference in his legs because of an accident that damaged his growth

plate when he was 14. He used to wear a heel lift and he said that

worked very well; now he doesnt use anything and he sometimes has

chiropractic issues in his back, but it does not really affect his

life beyond that.

I did call Dr. Ponseti yesterday. He said that I really didnt know enough info.

(whatpart is shorter. Is it the leg or the hips, etc) for him to really give me

an awnser. He said he wouldnt worry about it too much until I knew some more.

I scheduled an appt. with a local Ortho for Nov. 29th. Im not too sure if this

guy really deals with alot of this as we are a small town. But I am just going

to go in there, and tell him that he needs to do an ultrasound on her hips. And

if he doesnt, I will get it done elsewhere.

I keep thinking, if she does have hip dysplasia or something that will require

that hip brace...will she wear both the hip brace AND the P/M at the same time?

WIll I have to choose which one she'll wear? I mean, she is in the P/M till she's

4yrs. The hip thing is I think 2 months? But I dont want to waste our trip to

Iowa as she has A-Typical w/cavus. You know what I mean?!

I pray to God her hips are Ok, and I wont have to make that decision!

If you get a 2nd opinion it would be with a pediatric orthopedist. Make sure

they specialize in pediatrics though. Hip dysplasia is pretty common and if

caught early very easily treated! Our daughter's case is unusually complex in

that it is a congenital deformity present at birth, not the normal dysplasia.

Anyway, for peace of mind I would get it checked out. Also, does she have uneven

fat folds in her thighs/buttox area? That's another sign of dysplasia. If her

hips ever make a clicking, thumping, bumping noise that's another sign. Like if

she's sitting on your hip or if you bend her legs at the hips and knees you

might feel it (have you ever seen the dr. do this part of the exam at a

well-baby visit). I only recommend the ultrasound because of her age. I think

ultrasounds are most accurate up until 6 months and after that x-rays can be

adequate, Anyway, good luck with your decision.
