Guest guest
Dave I used to be an Ibuprophen freak and was kinda sad to see it on a list things not so hot for pouches along with a whole long notation of other things. I deal with significant discomfort in the right hip and also in the sternum from the heart surgery and my doc gave me Bextra. I explained all about this to him and he still thought I should try with him watching and monitoring closely. I did it for almost a year with no problems but finally made a decision that with all the other things I had going on, I did not want to risk gastric distress. The question about want anti-inflamatory is safe is sure to bring down a rain of posts re this one or that one. In the end, ya just kinda gotta take in as much info as ya can and be sure you have a doc you have great communication with to monitor whatever it is that you do. It's not a joint problem, but tissue. Is there any anti-inflammatory that's effective that we can take? I allow myself a couple of Ibuprofen every now and then for sleep, but I need to get on a regimen of *something* here for a while. A couple of weeks ago I had phlebitis in my leg. Painful as h---! My PCP called my surgeon, Dr. Boone in Fresno Ca. and was told RNY patients can take Celebex or Vioxx. (Please excuse my spelling.) I couldn't take Celebex because I'm allergic to Sulfa. Good luck, Gaylene 3/16/00 LAP RNY
Guest guest
- Good luck. I have hip pain which radiates to my upper thigh. Debilitating. I was told by a lot on the boards that we should not take Celebrex, Vioxx, any anti-inflammatory. Well, after careful consideration, I am taking Vioxx 25 mg. along with one aciphex a day and one zantac. Also, the vioxx is soooo helpful, that I only have to take one every other day. We have to live...I'm just trying to do it with the least amount of stress on my system. Good luck! Also, vioxx is REALLY expensive and my insurance wouldn't cover. I would have had to pay about $165 for 30 pills. Instead, I got 100 pills through a Canadian pharmacy for about $135. Such a deal! My dr. was great working with me. Guest guest
Celebex and Vioxx are in the same family as ibuprofen and Motrin. Just proceed with caution. Guest guest
My PCP called my surgeon, Dr. Boone in Fresno Ca. and was told RNY patients can take Celebex or Vioxx. ------------------------------------------------ & Gaylene: Celebrex and Vioxx are not good for our pouches anymore than Ibuprofen. When they were first marketed, that is how they were advertised, gentle on the stomach, great for arthritis sufferers. They have since found that Vioxx and Celebrex can and do as much damage as the other NSAID's. When I had the phlebitis in my arm, the surgeon wanted me on Vioxx. I made him call my gastro doc who instructed the surgeon that I can take it only for 3-5 days and that I would have to double up on the Nexium and Librax during that time period as a buffer for my stomach. Hope this helps. Regina
Guest guest
Like Fay, I have been on Vioxx since just a few months post-op (I tried to go cold turkey and my back hurt all the time). I know I run the risk of ulcers-bleeding and so far at 18 mo post I am lucky as I take a pill a day and so far, no problems. I take with food so hopefully I'll be OK. I agree that its best not to take anti- inflamatories, or at least to just take them short term. I no longer take Motrin for headaches/backaches etc, but I decided quality of life was important and the Vioxx makes a big difference. Cindy > Absolutely proceed with caution.
