I admit, I was a bit cranky has now increased BlastOff week to 1200 calories in his newest program. >I'm also thinking of buying one of those little personal cd > players for walking outside. My son doesn't leave home without his. It comes in handy with his 3 hours of mass-transit commute each day (1 1/2hr each way). If you download a lot of music from the web, AND you have a cd-r burner on your computer, be sure you get the player that also plays mp3s. My kid has saved *hundreds* of $$ that way. The kids aren't allowed to DL from file sharing sites like WinMX or Kazaa, because all that music is pirated, but they *are* allowed to go to the other sites, like MP3.Com (free) and the new Apple iTunes (pay) and still he has a load. Yesterday he got a bit over 500 megs of mp3's and it all took less than a half hour and didn't cost him a cent. Oh, how I wish we could afford cable modem or DSL service! Guest guest
I think you did everything right. It's not uncommon to have some red spots in the beginning until they get the fit just right. My son had them and everything worked out fine. The point on the forehead won't be dead center, it's usually a little off to one side or the other. I was told by our PT that as long as it didn't shift into the middle of one of their eyes, it was fine. It shouldn't shift over his ear though, but hopefully it just needs an adjustment there (I know most of my son's adjustments at the beginning of both of his bands was around the ears). Skin breakdown does occur, but you want to avoid it if possible, so leaving the band off was a good idea. I think my son's one red spot on his forehead bossing turned into a bruise after the redness had faded, but then the bruise faded and it was fine. I think that is just due to the child's skin sensitivity in general. I hope the adjustment goes well today! Good luck! They said he is starting at 19mm asymmetry. > The first night, he was up every 10 minutes crying. The next day I noticed a few red spots. One of them being in the right side of his forehead where there is " bossing " . I removed the band briefly and they faded. > I also purchased a memory foam topper for his crib. He seemed to sleep better Friday with it. > By Friday night, he seemed much more adjusted to the band. > My concerns began Saturday morning. When he woke up, I saw the band had shifted to the left (which it had done a couple times but not so severely). It was so left it was really pushing his cheekbone and forehead on the right top and sideburn side and completely covering and pushing in his left ear on the left sideburn side. I adjusted it, but was concerned that the " point " that was supposed to line up with his nose now only lined up when it was shifted. When it is on " correctly " (not pushing or covering his ear), the point is way off to the right. > Sunday his red spots were much worse, so I left the band off for a few hours. Especially the one on his forehead. After the redness faded (many hours) the skin on his forehead appears to be wrinkled and sagging. I'm not sure how else to describe it. > By Monday afternoon, I couldn't keep the band from shifting. As soon as I'd adjust it, it would shift. And now there was a bruise appearing on his forehead where the pepperoni shaped (and sagging, wrinkled) red spot had been. So I left it off Monday night and all day Tuesday. > Of course I noticed yesterday that his onesies barely fit over his head anymore, so there must have been a major growth spurt in the last few days, too. Unfortunately, I can't see any correction yet but that doesn't mean there wasn't any. > I know I may have done a major disservice in the treatment department but I couldn't continue the treatment if it was counter-productive and hurting my baby. I live more than 2 hours away from CT, so I can't just go there at the drop of a hat. > We go back today for the one week f/u. I will put the band on him before the appt so they can see the pressure points and the shifting and adjust the band appropriately. > In any of your experiences, have your children exhibited any skin breakdown or bruising with the bands? Guest guest
My son has very sensitive skin (my orthotist didn't believe me until he saw for himself!) and he did get red marks, skin breakdown, and staph infections (2) from the band. Whenever there was the slightest red, if I didn't leave the band off until ALL the redness went away, it got worse and risked infection. He needed frequent adjustment BUT when it was fitting properly, he didn't seem to mind the helmet. We got the band 1/30/09 and discontinued use about two weeks ago when he outgrew his first band and I didn't want to risk further infections for a second band. It is not all the way better, but the progress is definitely visible. It was borderline mild/moderate to start with so whatever improvement we got was helpful and he looks good now, and I " m hoping he'll round out some more on his own. That said, I think the helmet was useful and I think being vigilant about red marks helps a lot. Better to leave it off and wait to get it adjusted in my view than to put it on for a few hours when there's already a red mark. Cortizone helps a lot, too. Good luck! > > Hi everyone- > Just an update regarding Oliver's progress (or possible lack thereof). He started his DOC band last Thursday.
