Guest guest
Tasha,Here is my two cents worth that has worked everytime my 3 children have colds (have done this since they were old enough to take medicine). If you have a true ear/sinus/chest infection you would be running at least a low grade fever for more then 3 days, you would not be able to hear well due to congestion and inflammation, and you would be coughing and blowing yellow/greenish mucus with never any times where it is 'marbled' with clear mucus or times of just clear mucus. The morning is usually the worst, but after rising, taking a shower (the hot steam loosens it), etc., the mucus usually will begin to change from the thick yellow/greenish to more clear and thinner. So, to save you from the damage of an antibiotic, if you can say that the above is true, then definitely go get help. If you are having some clear mucus especially after clearing out the stagnant night mucus, then I would continue battling it out. Colds take anywhere from 7-10 days or more to recover from. I know that ibuprofin and sudaphed (active ingredient pseudoephedrine hydrochloride) contain illegals, but IMHO, that is much better than taking an antibiotic. If you can tolerate those (check the package insert on the Sudaphed), taken together, they will do a very good job of keeping your ears and sinuses open. Taking a cough remedy with just the active ingredient guaifenesin will help keep the mucus in your chest thinned so you can more easily cough it out. When you sleep at night, make sure you have a humidifyer going if your home is dry due to heating and sleep with your upper body and head slightly elevated/reclined to keep the mucus from pooling in your sinuses and ears. And lastly, if you can find a plain saline nose spray, that will also help clear the mucus.Hope you feel better soon!AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Thu, March 18, 2010 1:32:42 PMSubject: ear/sinus infection Any recommendations on which antibiotics are safest for us and our guts? I'm pretty sure I've got an ear/sinus/chest infection and have tried unsuccessfully to fight it all week naturally - so I'm off to the clinic this morning. Guest guest
If you have a viral infection then antibiotics won’t help. If it’s bacterial then I do not know which antibiotic is “safe”. If you have to take an antibiotic then make sure you take a SCD legal probiotic 2 hours away from the time you take the antibiotic because, as you probably know, antibiotics kill off the good bugs too. Hope you get to feeling better. Carol CD 22 yrs SCD 5 yrs From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of TQ Any recommendations on which antibiotics are safest for us and our guts? Guest guest
I think you can request an antibiotic spray up your nose. My sister got thatlast year though I guess it depends on your bacterial colonies.I'm just about to do the same thing - I've had a cold for about 10 daysnow, and I have a lot of head and chest congestion that won't go awayand really low energy. And it's just been lingering. If you have a viral infection then antibiotics won’t helpyeah - but an anti viral will. Mara. If it’s bacterial then I do not know which antibiotic is “safe”. Guest guest
Thanks for all of the ideas. I think I may try the colloidal silver as I have some. Just got back from the clinic, and they think it is viral. She gave me Mucinex - I'm guessing I know, but is it a big no-no??Subject: Re: ear/sinus infectionTo: BTVC-SCD Date: Thursday, March 18, 2010, 8:49 AM Tasha,Here is my two cents worth that has worked everytime my 3 children have colds (have done this since they were old enough to take medicine). Guest guest
Are you sure it is not from a yeast infection? My ears and nose plug up off and on all the time since I started prednisone, and I get yellow crusties (sorry, tmi). I might be fighting sinus infections, but the ears being plugged up also happens immediately if I have too sugary of a fruit (like banana), or if I have cheese or honey, which I have cut out. I've been having a lot of this lately and no clue why - I've cut way down on dairy (only yogurt and ghee) and barely any honey. Hadn't thought about fruit. yeah- sinuses have biofilms just like guts do. Mara
Guest guest
I always use oil of oregano - 4 or 5 drops in a shot glass of juice several times a day ALWAYS clears up my sons sinus infections. It's a natural antibiotic. You should google it - it's amazing. Come to think of it, he hasn't had a sinus infection this year (living in seattle it's always damp) maybe it's the SCD modified diet he is on. Collodial silver works too, heard you can put it up your nose diluted. Neti pots worked for my husband too. CD - 4 years SCD - 3 1/2 yrs. Thanks, Tasha Here's something which might be of use: · Help! My doctor says I have to take antibiotics for <fill in the blank>. But I just know they’re going to mess up my gut. Are there any antibiotics which are safe for SCDers? The following advice was originally from a Clostridium Difficile website (the origin of which I was unable to track). It is now posted on www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info. Antibiotics likely to cause problems: Clindamycin, Keflex, Ceftin, Ceclor, All other cephalosporins, Amoxicillin, Augmentin. Middle Of The Road (may or may not cause problems): Cipro, Levoflex (also Levaquin), Tequin, Avelox, Bactrim, Erythromycin, Biaxin, Zithromax Safe to Take: Macrodantin (Macrobid), Sulfa, Aminoglycoside, Flagyl (metronidiazole), Oral and IV Vancomycin As with anything medical, this recommendation is not intended to take the place of your doctor or healthcare professional’s advice. But it may give you a starting point for discussing alternatives with him or her. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
