There's just no way - sugar is a completely out of place spice in pesto. Makes no culinary sense. Fresh tomato sauce, yes. Pesto, no way. Well, I wouldn't be worried about it if I hadn't come across recipes for what purported to be pesto which DID contain sugar. I fully agree with you that it makes no culinary sense, but then, I feel that adding sugar, high fructose corn syrup, or raw evaporated cane juice to chicken broth makes no sense. And yet -- Swanson's adds HFCS, WHole Foods 365 Brand added RECJ, and I saw sugar in some other brand. More likely, it could have a tad of balsamic vinegar added. But all in all, an extremely little amount given the volume. Yes, it could have been a touch of balsamic vinegar that wasn't real balsamic. The culprit is much more likely to be mozzarella. Most likely. Mozzarella is loaded with lactose. Lactose is evil. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Update: No blood today. It was probably the Mozzarella, then.
Guest guest
Another update. After one day of eating at home and no bleeding, I ventured out to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse last night. Had petite beef fillet and steamed asparagus. The beef fillet was simply grilled and then tossed with parsley and butter. Nothing sounded illegal here. I had some bleeding today. Anybody knows any illegals here? Or is it just that I'm reacting to a heavy dose of beef (I just have small beef patties), and some 10 asparagus? This kinda sucks -- normal, simple pleasures we have to think so much Thanks, Andy.
Guest guest
I eat at Ruth's every week in Beverly Hills. My instructions to them are the petit filet with no " rub " as they call it, no seasoning, no oils or butter and a clean grill. I've never had a problem but allowing butter might be allowing other things also. Their steamed vegetables like broccoli or asparagus are are always served " clean " with out butters or oils. Guest guest
I would suggest waiting longer and staying on bland foods. It takes a long time to heal, longer than one day. I would suspect the " butter " which is sometimes margarine with flavoring. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I still rarely eat out. My approach to SCD was to realize I would just eat at home, for a long time, until I felt better. The few times I did eat out, it was plain unmarinated steak or fish with no seasonings and a small plain salad that I picked at. I went mainly for the social aspect, not the food. I had to eat a snack later as it was not enough for a meal. I like my own food because I know what is in it. Vegetables in restaurants were never cooked enough for me. I had to cook the daylights out of them to tolerate them at first. The first few months on SCD are a delicate time. I realized this was a big commitment, but feeling better in the long run is worth the sacrifice in the short run. Guest guest
PJ- Eating at home is what I've been doing. But with a good friend visiting after a long time and spring, I just couldn't hold myself cooking all the time for two people. I suppose I will have a longer healing next week. Ron- I thought since they're upscale, butter will not have margarine and it is the butter that gives the flavor Thanks, guys.
Guest guest
I know it's hard.... but hopefully you will get a rest this week.I have those times where cooking is just too much. I end up eating a lot of scrambled eggs and canned tuna. Do you have a freezer? It does help when I can make a lot of soup at a time and freeze. I also cook hamburger patties and freeze them individually. It helps. My family and friends just have to put up with me Until we have a chain of SCD restaurants...some day... Guest guest
Andy, I'm sure it is butter but they call it a rub which might include other seasoning ingredients. Ron
Guest guest
Ron- I thought since they're upscale, butter will not have margarine and it is the butter that gives the flavor When I eat out, I order my steak with no seasoning and no butter. I've discovered, to my dismay, that even upscale restaurants often use a mix of butter and margarine (because margarine is healthier! yeah, right!) in and on their food. I take real butter with me and toss a few tablespoons on the hot plate the steak comes out on, it melts, and then I spoon it over the meat. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund Babette the Foundling Beagle
Guest guest
I've tried Ruth's a few times and not had any problems. I think they are all SCD legal, salt, pepper, parsley and butter. Pretty sure they do not marinate or use margerine. I usually get the Cowboy Ribeye, steamed vegetables and nothing else. Only one time did I have some D the next day and that was probably because I had too much wine. The beef fillet was simply grilled and then tossed with parsley and butter. Nothing sounded illegal here. The only thing I can think is that maybe the beef was marinated in something already. Did you ask them about that? Also, they could've said it was tossed with butter, but really used a fake 'butter' with something illegal in it. Personally, I would just not eat out for a while if I were you! I'm surprised you were willing to try it again so soon after the last incident. Guest guest
I think in the beginning, you have to have the attitude that you are here for the company and not the food. I usually have a snack first, so I am not starving, and order something small. That way, if something is not right, I can just appear to pick at it and still have a good time. My wish is to recover enough to be able to tolerate illegals one day, just well enough to eat out once in a while and not to worry. I would still order from the menu scd legal foods, but if it is not perfect, still be OK. Until that point, especially in the beginning, we have to be super cautious. One day....
