This is the one I have.. My son's ST suspects he might be hyperlexic also

(he's 2 1/2). He's really interested in letters and books, but I don't know

if he is or not.

Both my sons are hyperlexic. When they were diagnosed the Speech Pathologist

verified it and said that we were one of the lucky ones to have a hyperlexic

child that understood what he was reading. I didn't know how I was lucky,

but I guess looking back it has helped both boys to develope speech. We had

everything written everywhere for them. Josh more so than Joey, is so

facinated by language. I find it amazing that he picks up foreign language

so quickly. Of course it is one word at a time.

Anyway, I don't want to ramble again like my previous email today. We did

note his reading ability when he was about 2.5 and spelling words on the

fridge with his magnetic letters.

Today, both boys can decode words which are very difficult and yes, those

words are much more difficult than what they understand. A great teacher

wrote 's IEP and stated right in the IEP that staff needs to be

careful not to confuse what he can decode with what he understands.

Thumbs up for " READING TOO SOON " and THumbs up for www.hyperlexia.org .

Good luck. Reading early can be a good thing.

For those that want to here a quick cute one:

When they were doing a reading test at 3 years old. The Speech Path showed

Josh a picture of various things. When she showed Josh the picture of

Mcs golden arches with the word Mcs written across it he

said......

are you ready for this one? ........... " Junk Food " . ;-) Sense of humor

even then.

Hi , I suspect this in my 3 year old too. He loves the computer

and on the PBS web site, he went to the JJ page and said " T, T the

jet plane " . I'm sure he was reading it...J's and T's look similar

and so he called it T.T. I really don't have any links for you...I

haven't found too much information on it.
