I honestly don't consider a sippy cup to be a bad habit. If he is unable to

use a straw or regular cup, I really think it would be putting to much

pressure on him, especially when school first begins. Are they willing to

work with him and assist him with drinking not using a sippy cup? I

understand that they are trying not to be mean, but you just can't expect

him to all of a sudden do this with out working on it. Maybe make a deal

that he starts the school year with a sippy cup, then you will try and work

on it at home, but they must help him as well. My sons school WELCOMES

sippy cups!! These kiddos have enough pressure on them, let them have some

comfort at lunch time instead of having them struggle then too. Take Care,

suggestions? Kindergarten is 3 weeks away and they do not want the sippy cup

in school.(If you just read my last post,I think I will have a constipated

,dehydrated son on my hands. The school is not trying to be mean but just

doesn't want to carry on these bad habits.) Any suggestions?

Is he in a special class where he has a 1 on 1 aide that will help him

with a transition to a regular drinking cup? If so, then I would

definetly go along with it. He is of the age to move on. And if he is

going into a reg. class the other children may goof on him. I look at LJ

as still a baby in my mind - and just to stop sending in a Winnie Pooh

thermos in the beginning bothered me, but his teacher made me realize

that LJ is ready to be moving on, and I have to let go some and let him

mature and grow up so he can fit in.

They are not bad habits for a child with Autism. I would send him to school

the first week without it and see what happens. Maybe in a different setting

he might do the opposite but if he doesn't then demand that he uses his

pull-ups and sippy cup until he is ready to not use them. My son just

finished kindergarten and one of the little boys in the class would poop in

his underwear and then take them off in the bathroom and throw them in the

corner ( and he was NT). All kids have a hard time at that age so I wouldn't

be too worried unless they start pressuring you. You could also have it

written into his IEP. Good luck. Kindergarten was such a scary and exciting

time for us. I'm glad we made it through.

My son is also 5 years old, he use to drink only from a sippy cup. If we

tried other cups he would not drink. What they tried at my son's school was

to gradually cut down the plastic spout(the white softer plastic ones), until

they started cutting the hole to the sippy cup bigger and bigger. Evenually

he had a sippy cup with half a lid and one day we just forgot to put the lid

on. This took months but it was worth it. Hope this helps.
