Guest guest
Hi...I just want some different opinions on vaccines. I homeschool my kids so I do not have the school situation to have to deal with. However, I do worry about whether I am making the right decision in not having any more vaccines at this point. is 7, and has not had his 5 year boosters in anything. I am absolutely sure that the MMR is what triggered his problems. He was absolutely healthy up until that point, and within a couple weeks after MMR vaccine, started having autistic tendencies, lost speech that he had for a while, and developed an eye problem (far-sighted and an eye that has had a tendency to cross over). What are your opinions on this??...Should I wait until he is older??..What about the DPT and all????....My instincts tell me to avoid the MMR....One thing I have learned is that I need to listen to these instincts, which also told me not to have him vaccinated when he was in for a check up after he had been sick. He was still running a low-grade fever, but the doctor insisted he needed to have his MMR...wish I had trusted my insticts then. Anyway, what are your opinions about this????? Thank much,

Guest guest
I would have his titers checked. I do not know the percentages, but many kids do not even need the second round of the MMR. Guest guest
This is such a personal decision to make but IMHO I would have the titers drawn to see if its even needed. If it is then its a hard decision to make,if you do decide to-make sure he is not sick and has not been sick recently-seperate the shot into three if possible and space it out a few months between. Good luck-I will be facing this decision soon myself and not looking forwrd to it. Lis AF advice on vaccines > > Hi...I just want some different opinions on vaccines. Guest guest
I liked the post a while back about asking your doc to check your child's titer levels, since most do not need the booster at all. Here it is: _________________________________________________________ This will probably only be of interest to you if: (1) your ASD child has not yet started kindergarten; (2) you plan to use any kind of traditional school (vs. 100% home schooling); (3) you think there could be link between vaccines and autism. If the above applies to your family, you may already know this, but just in case... it is very likely that your child is fully immunized against MM & R, and does NOT need the MMR booster. " MMR booster " is a misnomer -- 95% of kids who got the original MMR are immunized for life and do NOT need " boosting " . The MMR booster prior to kindergarten is just to capture the 5% of kids for whom the original vaccine never took properly. Your pediatrician can give you a lab req. for the MMR titers. (Most DAN! docs do this as a matter of course if your child is in the correct age range). If you're doing other blood draws anyway (nutritional testing, chelation checks), you can just have a little extra blood drawn to run the MMR titers. Chances are very good your child will show immunization. If so, your pediatrician can just add a brief letter to the GA state immunization form (there is no " box " for this on the form), stating that the child has demonstrated immunization and additional boosting is not medically required. That should be perfectly acceptable for any conventional school. Any time from age 4 to 6 yrs is acceptable. If you want to do this, try to do it as early as possible -- just in case your child is in the 5% of kids who were not immunized the first time. That will give you a bit of extra time to review your options and if you want to immunize, to spread out the single vaccines over time. (To paraphrase the esteemed Dr. Andy Wakefield, there is no guarantee that getting the full-blown disease won't be worse for these children developmentally than getting a small dose of the live virus, so not vaccinating isn't an easy decision either!). We did the above for our son: his titers showed he was fully immunized and his school accepted our pediatrician's letter in lieu of the MMR booster. ______________________________________________ I personally intend to do this with my NT children who are not yet school-aged. It's " too late " for my autistic son, who is almost 9 and had all the shots. He, however, didn't have a specific reaction to the MMR, but I believe was in the spectrum right from day one of the first shot he ever got, which had Thermerisol in it. I intend to make sure my doc uses shots with no mercury in them for remaining shots I need for my younger kids. Many already use Thermerisol-free vaccinations.
