Guest guest
My son takes a few particular supplements - DHA, folate, zinc, calcium/magnesium, vitamin D3. This way he gets exactly the amounts he needs, without having to add yet another vitamin in a multi. But a multi wouldn't hurt as long as you're getting the right amounts of what is needed. Careful about mega-vtiamins. My son reacted badly to a mega-multi-vitamin a few years ago, and it took several weeks to figure out what was the culprit. I bet Nature Made is not legal. No, not everyone on SCD has yeast issues. It just seems to be a problem for some that are on the list. My son doesn't have yeast issues. Guest guest
Sherry A multivitamin is a helpful supplement since so many of us with digestive disorders deal with malabsorption issues until significant healing has occurred. Let us know which multivitamin your son is using and we can check out the ingredients and let you know if it is OK. There are plenty of choices for a legal multivitamin. Most people dealing with digestive disorders also have to deal with a yeast overgrowth. It is part of having dysbiosis, or a gut ecology that is out of balance, and also part of being on immune-suppressant medications if they have an IBD. Some people have more severe yeast-related symptoms so need to take extra measures, but many find that time on SCD will also get their yeast levels back to normal. Kim M. He has been on one (from Nature Made) since his diagnosis in Aug. but I don't think it would pass as SCD legal. I know there's good chance of malabsorption so it would make sense to add that in. Guest guest
Liz,Pathogenic bacteria need iron. In fact, the body will actually sequester it (hide/store it) so that the bacteria can't get it. It actually will put you in a state of anemia in order to slow the progress of the bad bacteria. It isn't widely recognized yet, but it has been scientifically proven. Elaine knew this and that is why she said to avoid iron supplement. Also, what no one tells you is that iron and calcium (which a lot of multi-vitamin makers put in the same supplement) bind to each other and you won't get either. Just like you need Vitamin C to absorb Iron, you need to avoid calcium at the time you take iron. If you really need the iron, I think the doctor can give you an injection and that way you get the iron but the bacteria in your gut miss out. There are a couple of checks that your doctor can do to see if you are sequestering iron. I think it is by seeing if the Ferritin (storage iron) is in the normal to high range and the TIBC (total Iron Binding Capacity) is in the normal to low range. If you were not sequestering, the TIBC would be high trying to get the use of the iron as much as possible -- kind of like working overtime. If it isn't high while in the presence of good Ferritin levels but you are still 'anemic' in the hemaglobin levels, then that would mean you are sequestering.AmeliaHusband UC 9 years, SCD 20 monthsLDN 3 mgTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Mon, February 22, 2010 12:49:39 PMSubject: Re: Question on vitamins--yeast issues Not to hijack but why does iron make it illegal? how can you supplement iron then? thanks liz > > > > Hi all > > > > My son started the diet today (doing well so far) and I was wondering if a multi-vitamin is necessary. Guest guest
Here is something Elaine said about it: http://www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info/knowledge_base/kb/iron_supplements.htm Misty Kimble > > > > I get my multi vitamin at Lucyskitchen.com. It's a Freeda multi. If your multi has iron in it, it's illegal. Guest guest
Thank you for your responses...I did go to the files and read about candida. Now I'm more confused (it doesn't take much apparently). Is candida the yeast/bacteria that is actually causing the die off symptoms or is that something entirely different? According to the info that Misty left on iron, I did check the vitamins that my son was on and they do indeed contain iron. I have not given him those since last Friday. So, other than the ones we can get through Lucy's what others are legal? Thanks all, Sherry > > Sherry > > > > A multivitamin is a helpful supplement since so many of us with digestive > disorders deal with malabsorption issues until significant healing has > occurred. Guest guest
Do you have a Trader Joe's? I bought their multi with no iron, and am happy with it. It's easy to swallow the pills too.
