Dear ne,

If you can get three weeks that would be better. I'm going back to

work in 2 and a half weeks and really don't know how I'm going to

make it.

The biggest trial for me has been pain and food. Make sure you

have all your childrens motrin (liquid) and all others stocked up. I

can't tell tou how many times I have ran out. Also, the next most

frustrating thing is FOOD-liquid food and tools. Here is an

excellent website that has things that are better than a syringe to

drink thinks with:http://www.zip-n-squeeze.com

It also has great info about jaw surgery.

Lets see here are some other things to make your time go by

smoothly, you'll need a baby toothbrush. It makes brushing while

wired much less stressful, lots of boost. Try the flavors BEFORE the

surgery so you don't waste money. (I have loads of strawberry and

chocolate because I didn't know I didn't like them so much. I like

whole milk with carnation instant breakfast because its thin. But its

more of a snack because you need more protein. Make sure you have a

blender!! I just started potatoe soup liquified. mmmm BEST THING

YET! No one told me this and I think it was cruel.... The first

week is total hell!!!!! You just need pain meds, sleep, sleep, and

someone to bring you shakes and drinks. I still can't use a straw so

I am ordering a zip pouch and using a syringe. The next thing you

definately need is a calender. It feels so good to mark off weeks

and days. Good movies, good books, and good company (the company

should only come when you're ready) I wasn't ready until week 2. I

couldn't even get out of bed and dressed until week 2. The thing

that has helped me the most is my laptop!!! I felt claustrophobic not

being able to talk and open my mouth so emailing friends or strangers

like we do helps.

There are some fears I wish I would have known about sooner that

after the surgery. One is the fear that you can't breathe because a

stuffy nose when you're wire shut can be scary. Also I had blood

clots in my nose. The best thing for that ,and I don't know with a

nose job but you can ask, is nose spray and a suction bulb. No

blowing. Also lots of Qtips. I had dried blood lingering all of

week 1. Another thing that helps is hot showers- the steam.

I was really depressed and unprepared for how bad that first week

would be. I felt angry and sorry that I had done it. My face was so

swollen I couldn't tell any improvement, and quite frankly a

different chin scared me...did I really like it, did I even look like

me?? But as the swelling went down each day I felt more like me only

improved and actually can be happy about the results- even though I

am still swollen and have puffy cheeks.

That reminds me you need a good cold pack that velcrows around your

face (the two I got from the hospital tore up fast and leaked. That

website above has a great cool pack. Also you need a rice pack that

you can put in the microwave. The first week keep that cool pack 15

min and warm pack 15 min alternating constantly and it releives the

pain and makes the swelling go down faster.

Today when I went to the OS for my one week check up my doctor said

some good things although I didn't appreciate it at the time, He said

just remember you don't have cancer and this is only a month for

results that laST A LIFETIME!

Hope this helps!

Your doc is absolutely right, Jane... And indeed, this whole surgery

is simply to make things better; not getting rid of something that

threatens your life. That's worth remembering, always....

Ok. this is awful, I am responding to my own message! I need to go

back to work. LOL But the first 2 weeks post op I was mortified at

not being able to eat. It was harder than I thought it would be. I

would not allow myself to think of food for a second and would turn

the channel if i even suspected a food commercial.

But now I have succombed to the thoughts. . . and the more I think of

foods the more humorous it is becoming. I have been watching food

network and thinking of new things I would like to try. Before the

surgery I was in a food rut. I wanted junk food and didn't crave

anything good for me. My last meal was an extra long coney tator

tots, a milk shake, then later that night chili's southwestern

eggrolls and nachos!!

I realized today that being hungary, REALLY hungary, has made me want

to eat differently. I was really negative immediately after the

surgery and now realize going into week 3 soon that this could be a

life altering time. A time of suffering, strength, pondering what

other things I want to change within to go along with my

new " aligned " smile (since I have more time than I thought to get

through all this).

Ya, that sounds a lot better than being negative about me and

nitpicking my bone structure and features. This can be a new

beginning since I am going to be 26 in a few weeks and will soon be

moving maybe and my husband is starting a new stage in his life. I

think after all this I will be more open to others, appreciative of

food! myself and my looks, and just everything that has been

difficuly-breathing, talking to my sweet baby, eating... just a

thought!:)

AAAAAAghhhhh..

I don't know if any of you have done this before but I do it all the

time. Writea message and then go back to the board without hitting

send!

When I first had the surgery I was miserable! I was mortified at how

hard it was not eating and even harder thinking of not eating for a

month! I was very negative and mad. I would not even think of food

and would change the channel if I even suspected a food commercial.

Now I think of food all the time and where I want to eat and what I

would like to eat when this is over. It is getting humerous. I am

watching food network. I want to try new foods now.

Before the surgery I was in a junk food rut. I didn't crave healthy

foods and my last meal the night before surgery was a foot long coney

and tator tots from sonic, then later southwestern eggrolls and

nachos from chili's. I guess I was kind of in a junky rut on the

inside too.

Now that I am suffering for at least 3-4 more weeks I could use this

time to think of how I want to change on the inside too. Be more

open to others, more assertive, less critical of myself, eat better,

all things to go with my new aligned smile- Since I am turning 26 in

a few weeks and maybe moving soon and husband starting a new stage.

I think I will appreciate eating more, talking to my sweet baby,

smiling!

I know what you mean about thinking about food all the time! Even

the food in the ghastly cafeteria at work is starting to smell good.

(as I go for another cup of tomato soup to eat through my straw, who

knows how long it has been in that pot!) I am now on day 21 and

luckily my OS said he will take the splint out this Thursday -- oh

the joy of being able to say the letter 's' again! Unfortunately I

must follow that immediately with a trip to the ortho for some

adjustments. I guess I'll take that kind of pain to get this thing

out of my mouth!

Jane, I just wanted to comment on how well you are progressing. I

remember back to I think your first week after your surgery and you

were a much different person. You seem to be in much better spirits

with a totally new outlook on things now. It must be very difficult

to be wired and not knowing when anything is going to change. I

honestly don't know if I could've done that so my hat goes off to

you for not going mad through this process. I know I'm looking

forward to maybe 6 months from now when all of the visible swelling

is gone and reflecting on this whole experience. Hopefully I will be

able to laugh (without the pain I experience now!) and then follow

that laugh with a big bite of something hard and crunchy.

Jane,

Im so happy to read your email. Im in week 4 and I

thought I was acting like a big wimp. I to have had

and extremly hard time with the eating. I seemed to

only be able to drink cold watrery drinks and Ensure.

i will say that week three with the straw is a whole

new world and you will feel a little more human.

Your expiernce was amirroed image of my own. I to felt

like what was I thinking in that first week, and even

the second week. It seems like time is moving both

fast and slow, but this was a harder expiernce than

the doctors lead me to beleive. I still have a hard

time falling asleep, the pressure in my head and ears

at night is pretty intense, I have been using ambian

to sleep. I sleep with the ice packs, it seemd to

giveme both a physical and mental relief.

I went back to work today, week 4, I dont know how you

went week 2. I cant beleive they say 7-10 days. What

a lie! I dont know if its the starvation or chapped

lips that make me miserable.

But in the eend, as you said, Ithink I'm pretty happy

wit hthe results. Its hard, people do not recogonoze

me and it makes me a little uneasy. Plus I cant talk

so well so I feel like and aileen. I will try your

potatoe soup suggestion. How do you eat. Do you put

the straw/syringe in the side of your mouth. Its so

mentallly exhausting to eat, but I will say Im

starving.

Are you still taking pain medication? How long are

you on a liquid diet? I think I have 21/2 weeks form

today. I pray!!!

Take care,

Jodi

Jodi,

Hey,I can only stay positive for increments of an hour at a time but

that's a big step fron last week. I quit taking pain medicine for a

couple of days altogether and on my one week checkup the pain was bad

so my dr said continue to take over the counter pain med. I take

children's motrin before bed and when I wake up. It seems to help

sleep.

I am like you thin liquids only and am STARVING. I eat with a

syringe which to me puts even more of a damper on my liquid diet. I

am soooo ready to drink with a straw. My mom ordered me 10 zip and

squeeze pouches today. We'll see how they work.I have to put the

syringe in the left side of my mouth just in the right spot or food

doesn't go in the space and comes out. I can drink water out of a

glass but honestly it's so weird drinking through those bottom front

teeth!! I had two differnt potatoe soups one has melted velveeta

cheese thinned with milk and one just potatoes onions butter and half

and half instead of milk. They were both salty and good but I had to

thin them like water.

Good Luck!

Hi ne,

It is normal to be freaked out. I have to say, I started freaking out

when they told me to climb onto the operating table. I was ready to

jump off and run away.. but didn't...:). I was also very freaked out

3 days before surgery (also my last day at work), but the rest of the

time was too busy preparing, so no time to freak :). Try to relax and

have some nice meals - you won't be chewing anything for a while!

4 days in the hospital sound like a lot - do you know why? Is there a

reason why they will be keeping you in the hospital for so long? They

kicked me out the next morning (said whenever I felt like leaving

would be fine), and told me I don't have to come out in a wheelchair

if I didn't want to - I walked all the way to the car.

As far as 2 weeks - that could be enough or could be not depending on

how you heal. The first week is kinda tough. Second is much better,

but even if I felt better, I was still very weak and dizzy at times.

I would try to make sure you can take some more time off work if

necessary.

Good luck, and try to stay calm.

Irene.

Cold / heat pack alternative:

I put ice packs or heated packs in 2 long sweatsocks, tied the ends

together with a hair elastic and rested it on top of my head with the

heat or cold hanging like pigtails on my cheeks.

It worked for me!

Oh Lord! We must be watching the same channel.... I have been dreaming

about the Olive Garden too! I've only been there maybe 3 times in my

whole life but suddenly nothing sounds better than unlimited bread

sticks and salad with some pasta with veggies and sauce... I know the

commercial did this... someone should write to their advertising dept.

to say good job...

Tova,

I am soooo laughing right now! My husband came home today and I was

still watching food network and he said Why do you torture yourself?

But I was enjoying it more than ever. I think when all is said and

done I'll be a healthier eater. I think the key is letting yourself

get hungary enough to enjoy food. My husband always has a glass of

wine with supper and I never did. Tonight while he had a big juicy

steak, a baked poatoe and a glass of Sheratz I thought ....Yep when I

can eat again i am going to have wine with my food to enhance the

flavor. Maybe I'm going crazy!!

I noticed that people keep apologizing to me for eating in my

presence... I'm like " Go ahead! Eat the steak! Use lots of sauce! "

Sunday my boyfriend went out to buy himself a slice of pizza. When he

returned, he had also bought a " grandpa slice " which has tons of sauce.

I slurped the sauce off it and let him have the dough.

I have always been one for healthy foods- not intentionally- just not a

huge sweets fan- but i did not realize how much a crave meat. I don't

think I could last as a vegitarian for more than 6 minutes. I'm not a

big wine person either but it definitely makes you think about food

differently. My boyfriend and I often go to my best friends for friday

night dinner. for the last month, they have been eating chicken, orzo,

and apple pie while I slurp mashed potatoes from a glass... I am DYING

for my friday night chicken... I knew it was good but now I realize

it's very, very good.

I know after this I will appreciate food so much more and be careful

to enjoy it! I thought last night it would be nice to go out to

dinner where we usually go to this japanese steak house and just

watch my husband eat sushi. I miss that stuff too!

I thought that too... went for sushi with my boyfriend and some

friends... it was nice but my miso soup was not so satisfying. I stuck

a little peice of fish into my cheek just to taste it and it got

clogged and I started getting nervous and panicky but didn't want to

let anyone see so I went to the bathroom and tried to pick it and flush

it out and I blowed so hard into the sink with that nasty Ssssss sound

and it wasn't budging... I nearly freaked out but then it came loose

and I was ok. That was the last time I tried to be a wise-ass with food

in public. My boyfriend IM'ed me that he went to our fave sushi spot to

get some takeout tonight and the guy that works there inquired as to

how I was doing. I thought that was so nice! Maybe next time we go

there, he'll give me free food just cuz I can finally eat it!

Rina, I had lower only and took a week and a half off to recover.

My first Monday and Tuesday back were half days and then I went back

to a regular full-time schedule. You'll be tired, but it's

possible. Oh, and my job is 100% talking. I definitely didnt sound

like myself banded shut, but it was possible to understand what I

was saying. If you're having more done like lower AND upper, I

would suggest more time off. As a long time lurker on this board, I

can tell that those kinds of procedures are harder to bounce back

from.

In any case, GOOD LUCK!

Hi Rina,

I had upper, lower, and genio 5 weeks ago and am just back to work

full time today. I think I would have been okay going back after 3

weeks, but I'm glad I was able to get the extra time. I had a

splint on and was rubberbanded shut for 5 weeks, and couldn't talk

well at all until that was removed. Just beware that it will be

hard for folks to understand you in the beginning, especially over

the phone. Good Luck!

I am an elementary teacher (talk ALL day long) and I went back 2

weeks post op. I had upper moved forward expanded with 2 piece, and

lower moved back and to the left. It was hard going back due to the

talking but the best thing I did because I felt more normal again

(despite my looks) and made time pass quicker!
