With an upper GI, you drink some stuff, and they watch it flow

through you on a TV/X-ray screen. This is what found my staple line

disruption. It could also be used to check for fistulas and certain

blockages, I suppose. But, for ulcers, as the others have said, you

would need to be scoped.

I believe this to be true too... When I had a bowel obstruction a while

back, they did one of these, but my surgeon's office insisted it was an

ulcer and the xray tech explained if I had an ulcer in the transected

part of my stomach, it certainly wouldn't show...

I do not believe an Upper GI discovers an ulcer. Mine were found by an

endoscopic exam.
