Guest guest
I think you may want to ask your OS this question. I had upper surgery and my surgeon explained that the numbness resulted from him " stretching " the nerves during surgery. He did not have to cut them in any way. > > > > > > > > I am 5 months post-op and still have signficant numbness in my > > > upper > > > > gum and back by my lower molars. Is this common? Guest guest
I am 10 weeks post op, and last week I asked my OS about the feeling in my upper gums, and yes, the nerves were cut across the top. I thougtht at first they were just touched, but now that I can talk with him about it more, he did tell me they are cut across, and the numbness around my nose is from the strecting of the nerves. I have been doing " facial stretching " on my own, and this really seems to help my lip a lot. I was wired for 7 weeks, and the splint was on for another 2, so it is just now that I am able to move my upper lip in a stretching motion. good luck. bethanne > > > > > > > > > > I am 5 months post-op and still have signficant numbness in > my > > > > upper > > > > > gum and back by my lower molars. Guest guest
They do not. Neither the infraorbital nerve nor the inferior alveolar nerve are cut during upper/lower surgery. If they are cut, it results in permanent numbness, which occurs accidentally, as we all know can be a risk of surgery. If you're referring to the smaller minor nerves in the gums, sure, they're all over the place, and they are cut through. > > > > > > > > I am 5 months post-op and still have signficant numbness in my > > > upper > > > > gum and back by my lower molars. Guest guest
I dont think the surgoen cuts thru any main nerves, but i would think the nerves that go to each tooth would be cut in the surgery. I am not an expert so I dont know. But thats why I am assuming the gums and teeth are the last to get feeling because those small sensory nerves were cut in the surgery. > > > > > > > > > > I am 5 months post-op and still have signficant numbness in > my > > > > upper > > > > > gum and back by my lower molars. Guest guest
i think this thread should be put to rest, and we should all just agree that every surgery is different. sometimes the nerves are cut, sometimes stretched, sometimes bruised. but no one has a definitive answer because there isn't one. agreed? gina > > > > > > > > > > > > I am 5 months post-op and still have signficant numbness in > > my > > > > > upper > > > > > > gum and back by my lower molars. Guest guest
Your numbness sounds completely normal to me, and I would expect to be numb for sometime to come. I am still somewhat numb from my genio on October 5, and it grossed me out to touch my lower lip and chin for quite some time. When the nerves started to reawaken, my chin became really sensitive, and I found it difficult to find a comfortable position to sleep in. I am happy to say that I do have feeling down there now, but it's not 100%. From what I understand, nerves take quite a while to heal. The feeling will come back very gradually, and you may feel some intense electrical impulses from time to time. That's just your nerves trying to reconnect. Congrats on making it to the other side! Keep us posted on your progress. > > I am now 7 days post op (lower advancement) I am not very swollen in > the cheek area but my Chin and lower lip are extrememly numb. Guest guest
Hey there - I am 6 days post op and of course still numb too. I don't expect that to fully go away for a long time from what I have read. You should check with your surgeon in your follow up appointments to see when the numbness should begin to subside. It's a long road but I am sure months from now it will all look small Keep on trooping! Sick of smoothies yet? I am! Cheers, Jen > > I am now 7 days post op (lower advancement) I am not very swollen in > the cheek area but my Chin and lower lip are extrememly numb. Both > feel like rubber when I touch them.
