What are some of you taking in the way of supplements?

multivitamin, tums, iron and thats about it!

> Do you increase dosage of medications?

I've not needed to but I only take wellbutrin and so far that seems to be

working fine at the same dose as pre surgery.

Yep. No problemo.

> What are some of you taking in the way of supplements?

1 prenatal vitamin

1 " Allergy A & D "

1000 mg calcium carbonate w/vitamin D

That's it.

> Do you increase dosage of medications?

Haven't seen any need to. My paxil works fine. I do take one SR

(sustained release) med that I might need to switch to the short

acting, but I haven't decided for sure yet.

> How big is your stomach or pouch or whatever? What do you call it?

It's called a stomach. I'm not really sure how big mine is at the

moment, but I know my surgeon (Dr. Anthone) usually shoots for 100 to

150 ml, which is about 3-5 ounces, I think.

> DS doesn't have a stoma, but do we still

> have to chew the dickens out of our food?

Nope! (Except for the first couple months, while your stomach is

healing and while your body adjusts to stuff.)

> There isn't any place for it to get stuck, right?

Nope. Not unless you are into swallowing your food whole. (;

a few questions

> Can DSer's drink with their meal?

Absolutley!!!! And I do!

> What are some of you taking in the way of supplements?

I take 6 vita4life and 6 calcium citrate per day

> Do you increase dosage of medications?

Only if labs show it needs to be done....Im 9 months out and only had to

increase Vit D

> How big is your stomach or pouch or whatever? What do you call

it?

My stomach started out at 5 ounces and is now 9-10 ounces which is

normal..it is not called a pouch. that is reserved for the RNYers whose

stomachs have been mutilated!

> DS doesn't have a stoma, but do we still have to chew the dickens out

> of our food? There isn't any place for it to get stuck, right?

Right....you dont need to chew your food to death like the RNYers do.....no

place for it to get stuck!

Yes, but not too much, because the stomach is much smaller after the operation.

>What are some of you taking in the way of supplements?

Calcium, water soluble vitamins A,D,E, and K. Multivitamin.

Acidophilus bacterial culture. Iron (more important for menstruating

women than for men).

>Do you increase dosage of medications?

No. Actually, I have decreased (diuretic, beta blocker) or

eliminated (Lipitor--statin) my other meds since losing some of my

weight, and all might be eliminated by the time I reach my goal

weight.

>How big is your stomach or pouch or whatever?

Mine is about the size of a deflated football. Others have bigger

ones. That's one instance where I don't envy those with bigger ones

than mine ;-)

>What do you call it?

" Rover. " Or " Hut-hut. " Or, if i want to get technical and scare the

poor thing, " Pannus. "

>DS doesn't have a stoma, but do we still have to chew the dickens out

>of our food?

Nope. Not at all. That is, unless you are trying to empathize with

an RnY patient.

>There isn't any place for it to get stuck, right?

If the piece of meat is too big, it can get stuck in your throat.

See " Heimlich Maneuver. "

Seriously, once it gets to the stomach, normal digestion handles it

well. Not so in the RnY.

HOWEVER...your newly reduced stomach and your new intestinal

interconnections would be sore and tender for a month or so, which

means that you should not test them with difficult things like a big

hunk of unchewed meat for several weeks-to-months. But, four months

out, I eat just about everything that I had eaten pre-op, and take no

special precautions as to how much I chew it before swallowing.

Hi Lee Anne - I interspersed in your e-mail below:

| Can DSer's drink with their meal? I have been able to drink with my meals

since I was in the hospital after my surgery.

| What are some of you taking in the way of supplements? I take Vita4Life

vitamins, which are made especially for weight loss surgery patients. I

order them from http://www.vita4life.net

| Do you increase dosage of medications? I was able to absorb my medications

sufficiently, that I didn't have to increase the dosage.

| How big is your stomach or pouch or whatever? 4-5 ounces

What do you call it? a stomach

| DS doesn't have a stoma, but do we still have to chew the dickens out

| of our food? No

There isn't any place for it to get stuck, right? Right - the stomach

functions like a normal stomach, as the pyloric valve remains in tact.

Hope this helps -

I have a little different experience. I was instructed in the beginning not

to eat and drink at the same time. It causes a " flushing " in you that can

trigger cramps. But after a short time of healing I was able to. And I'm on

Zoloft and had to double the dosage.
