Guest guest
In regards to #3, I did not menstruate for about for the first year or longer after being diagnosed and being very ill. My natural doctor told me it was not detrimental to my health to not have it (I was not trying to get pregnant). At some point during the 2nd year after my diagnosis it returned and has been fairly regular since then. That's been my experience. I do not have specific studies to point to, but I once read on BCP package that at least that brand, which I don't remember, had a potential side effect of colitis, and an internist w/ alternative health views advised me against taking - so take that for what it is worth. I'm sure others will have experiences to share too. Is bee propolis legal? I know the pollen is not, but I didn't see anything about bee propolis.2. I'm concerned about not getting enough iodine. The sea salt I use doesn't have very much at all, but all the salt I found with potassium iodide has dextrose in it. Do you guys know of any salt with iodide that doesn't have dextrose?3. Hope this isn't TMI, but I've only had my period once since I was diagnosed six months ago. My husband and I are hoping to try and have kids sometime this year. I went to the gynecologist, and went on a 10 day course of pills that were supposed to get me to have my period. No luck yet, though I have a couple more days where it could happen. If not, I'm supposed to take a month's worth of birth control to hopefully get things started again. She gave me a free pack, they're chewable, so I'm sure there are illegals in it. I have never taken birth control before, so are there any birth control pills that don't have illegals? I don't even know if I have to get a prescription for those though, and I'm wondering if the chewable ones will be that detrimental. Thoughts?I am scared to take birth control since I never have before, and I'm not sure how it will affect my crohn's. Do any other females have problems with their cycles, and were you ever able to get regular again? Thanks,Amber
Guest guest
Thanks, Tasha, I appreciate your input. I thought I had read something about BCP having side effects on colitis as well, but I can't remember if that was in conjunction with another drug or just by itself. I'll have to do more research. > > > > Subject: bee propolis, salt wtih iodide, birth control pills > To: BTVC-SCD > Date: Thursday, February 4, 2010, 8:26 AM > > > Â > > > > Hope you don't mind my asking 3 varied questions in one topic, but here goes: > > 1. Guest guest
Amber - are you currently flaring? My period stopped when I got really sick and anemic. It came back on its own once my body started healing itself. Stacey > > 3. Hope this isn't TMI, but I've only had my period once since I was diagnosed six months ago. Guest guest
Hi Stacey, I had my first flare but it thankfully calmed down with my earlier Remicade infusion. I was in remission for the months before that though- at least symptomatic remission. But I had blood work done and everything was coming up in the normal ranges. So, I don't know. I hope it comes back on its own. Never would have thought I would have missed it! Actually, I don't think my blood tests check for anemia, so maybe I need to look into that. Thanks! > > > > 3. " The properties of the propolis depend on the exact sources used by each individual hive; therefore any potential medicinal properties that may be present in one hive's propolis may be absent from another's, and the distributors of propolis products cannot control such factors. This may account for the many and varied claims regarding medicinal properties, and the difficulty in replicating previous scientific studies investigating these claims. Even propolis samples taken from within a single colony can vary, making controlled clinical tests difficult, and the results of any given study cannot be reliably extrapolated to propolis samples from other areas. The body doesn't need very much iodine. If you like your sea salt, then consider something like BodyBio's liquid minerals. I believe they also have some testing stuff to see if you actually need it. 3. Hope this isn't TMI, but I've only had my period once since I was diagnosed six months ago. Do any other females have problems with their cycles, and were you ever able to get regular again? Some people can handle birth control just fine. Check the ingredients. Ask your doctor if you can get something which does not contain ingredients to which you are sensitive (no need to go into your " restrictive " diet). Just as an FYI, Elaine used to say that if she had been smart, she'd have marketed SCD as a fertility diet instead of a gut diet -- because many women who have tried to get pregnant and couldn't do so while on SCD. It's a very healthy diet for a pregnancy -- don't let anyone try to tell you that you have to have grains! A friend of mine had been told that because of her autoimmune issues, she would never be able to get pregnant without major medical intervention. She was also told that if she did manage it, she wouldn't be able to carry to term without major interventions. I'd given her a copy of BTVC and Lucy's cook book. Four months on SCD and she was pregnant. She now has two healthy boys and is debating whether she wants to try for a third. Guest guest
Thank you, everyone, for your input. The more I think about it, the more I think I would like to wait to see if my body can have a period again on its own. But I am starting to worry that my biological clock may be winding down. I'm 31 and I know that by the time a women reaches 35 the risks increase for the baby, so I kind of feel pressured a little. Hopefully things straighten out within the next 6 months, if not, I don't know. But you're all right, it's probably best to let my body heal on its own first. Plus I'm on meds, and perhaps they are having an effect on my cycle. Sigh...to be healthy again. Hopefully I'll get there. Thank you again for your support and input. Take care, Amber

Guest guest
Hi Amelia, Sorry for the late response. I just want to say thanks for the encouragement. I'm starting to get worried that I may never be able to conceive since my period does not want to come back. But I'm happy to hear you were able to conceive despite reasons you though you may not. Somebody mentioned anemia- is that a possible reason to not have a period? I just had bloodwork done, and I am anemic. Although I forgot to ask for the numbers. I'm also flaring, I suppose. My sed rate is 58, but I've heard other people that have their periods still when they flare. Just starting to get worried. I really hope this Crohn's hasn't made me infertile. Amber > > Amber, > > I was nearly 32 when I gave birth to my first son (fell pregnant 2 months into the marriage), nearly 36 when I gave birth to my second (after trying once on Father's Day), and my third son was born shortly after my 37th birthday (that's what I get for joking about being able to handle a 3rd better than my husband could!). I had never been pregnant before the first one and have only ever been pregnant the 3 times. I had been on the pill for at least 10 years, and had some 'female' trouble that convinced me it would be difficult to conceive. My husband also had reason to believe he wouldn't be capable of fathering children. > > When your body is ready, it will happen, whether you are ready mentally or not! ; ) > > Amelia > Husband UC 9 years, SCD 19 months > LDN 3mg > > > > > ________________________________ > > To: BTVC-SCD > Sent: Thu, February 4, 2010 8:16:27 PM > Subject: Re: bee propolis, salt wtih iodide, birth control pills > > > Thank you, everyone, for your input. > > The more I think about it, the more I think I would like to wait to see if my body can have a period again on its own. Guest guest
Amber,There is quite possibly something else going on. Have you had your thyroid and adrenals checked properly? It is entirely possible that anemia could play a part. Also, do you really want to be pregnant while flaring if you can help it? If you are unwell at this moment, it is best not to add stress to your body. Let it heal. The more you stress the more you are hurting yourself. There is a huge emotional factor in becoming unwell sometimes. I used to be a computer programmer before having children. I attended a stress seminar because of my job. I was told that when you even think about a stressful moment that happened in the past or verbalize it, your body produces enough stress chemicals to keep you 'attack ready' for 5-8 hours. If you do that 3 times a day and you have effectively given yourself enough to keep you awake for nearly 24 hours. You also stress your adrenal glands if done constantly and that affects your other hormones and body systems robbing it of nutrients, vitamins and minerals keeping it from working properly. BTW, just because you have a period does not mean you are fertile. All it means is that one has enough estrogen to grow the lining in the uterus. It does not mean it is a healthy, life supporting lining nor does it mean you are producing progesterone which without a pregnancy can not be sustained. So, in short, just focus on treating yourself well and healing. The baby will happen when it is supposed to.AmeliaHusband UC 9 years, SCD 20 monthsLDN 3 mgTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Thu, February 25, 2010 3:13:21 PMSubject: Re: bee propolis, salt wtih iodide, birth control pills Hi Amelia, Sorry for the late response. Guest guest
Debbie,Funnily enough, I think I have adrenal problems right now ; ) Seriously, though, I usually just do a mental redirect. My former neighbour had depression and one of her therapy seminars discussed recognizing black thoughts and how to redirect one's thinking to happier memories or ideas to stop the decline into the attack. I generally try to listen to music that is uplifting in message and sound to keep me less stressed. It gives me a happy attitude which in turn helps me feel grateful, which helps me relax. Other than that I try to get plenty of exercise by keeping up with 3 growing boys! I get plenty of upper body exercise (usually cooking and chopping/prepping food), weight lifting (lots of laundry with 3 boys--full laundry baskets are heavy!), and stairmaster (except mine are wooden, and only work when going up!)Sorry, just needed some comic relief.....Amelia To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Fri, February 26, 2010 12:18:33 PMSubject: Re: Re: bee propolis, salt wtih iodide, birth control pills That's an interesting post. Guest guest
Hi Kat, I appreciate your chiming in! I found out I'm only " slightly " anemic (not sure of the numbers), but I'm hoping that's the reason I've lost my period and it can be corrected. Glad you got yours back, and I hope mine makes an appearance on of these days. Amber > > In case you would like more corroboration, my period got lighter and lighter when I was losing blood and then I didn't have one one month. I had my thyroid tested, but I don't know if it was the proper testing. And I'm a little confused about the adrenal testing, because from what I've read about it, most doctors don't test for adrenal fatigue- is that right? So if I had it tested somewhere online, then if the tests come back as my having adrenal fatigue, what would I do?Also, I'm curious, if a person does have adrenal fatigue, does exercising make it worse? You're right though, I really don't want to get pregnant now while I'm still flaring and sick. I can barely take care of myself right now, so adding a baby into the mix right now doesn't seem feasible. I will have to learn to be patient, which I'm not very good at!Thanks for your input, Amber
