Guest guest
Hi Candace All of the things you have mentioned here [including the PTSD] are included in the autism/AS diagnostic criteria. If you go to my site link here, you can read for yourself the actual criteria. Look at the links DSM-IV Autism and a little further down DSM-IV Asperger Syndrome. http://home.pacbell.net/cscomp/parentin.htm#diagnostic Perhaps you can print out these pages and bring them to the doctors you are seeing. If you cannot find a doctor who is intelligent enough to see these things, you can try a DAN doctor, but they tend to be expensive and not take most insurance, altho there are a few who are less expensive and/or take insurance. http://www.autism.com/ari/danlist.html If you tell me where you live I can try to find other sources as well. Have you had your son evaluated by your school district? Perhaps you can get an accurate diagnosis through your school. Just another avenue to consider. Here is jypsy's section on Angelman Syndrome, very good. http://www.isn.net/%7ejypsy/angelman.htm Here is my medication section if you would like more information on any of your son's medications. http://home.pacbell.net/cscomp/parentin.htm#medications
Guest guest
HI Candace No one here on the list can tell you for certain about son's diagnosis Lots of things or symptoms that you talk about your son may be related to Autism type diagnosis. Since he has had a traumatic event and carries some other diagnosis, getting a good assessment is really important. I think only hands on MD-pschiatrist or psychologist can do that. Plus I'm sure he is on meds and this complicates things. Lots of folks have given you information on what read. I want to encourage you and support you in getting your questions answered. It sounds like your son needs a through assessment by a competent psychologist (Ph.D)or psychiatrist (MD) A DAN doctor would be ideal unfortunately many have long waits and it sounds like you have a handful. See if you can find a doctor - psychaitrist connected with a major medical school or university. It also helps if they are board certified with American Academy for Children and Adolescent Psychiatry. It indicated they specialize with children and have taken a kiddo residency. It would be great if they are familar with Autism also. I would openly discuss your concerns re: ASD diagnosis in light of your daughter's diagnosis with that doctor. I am nurse and I have worked in Mental Health and it concerns me when folks start carrying multi diagnosis because they generally don't fit any one category and I think that should send professionals a flag. Again I can't say what diagnosis he is but I think you are doing the right thing. I tried to post earlier but my computer keep shutting down God bless and good luck Jeneane, Houston Nick 5-NT 3-PDD Nos Beth 2-NT
Guest guest
Dear Candace, While it is impossible for anyone to make a diagnosis without more information, the symptoms you describe are consistent with an autistic spectrum disorder. I agree with others who have said you need a specialist or team of specialists to see your child and you. I have found both personally (I have a 7 year old son with probable Aspergers') and professionally (I am an SLP who works with children with autism) that medical doctors are not always the most helpful. Do you have a children's hospital or major university/medical school nearby? Those are good places to start. I realize you have had a terrifying experience with the school district, so I would look for independent sources of information on who is good for evaluations in your area. Also, if you have or know of any private schools that work with children with autism, they often have good resources or might even do evaluations, depending on the expertise of their staff and the scope of what they do. Free-standing speech therapy centers also may be able to " steer " you to a place that does evaluations in your area. Getting the diagnosis can be difficult, but is exceedingly important. I wish you all the best...if you let us know where in the country you are located, perhaps folks who are in your general area can give you some ideas. Bless you for all you are going through. Hope we can be helpful. Fondly, J

Guest guest
I have a question I havent seen discussed here.....what happens when someone has the DS and even though they take their supplements faithfully and eat plenty of protein, eats alot of junk foods too? I know of someone doing this but they dont seem to think its a problem if they are faithful with water, protein and supplements. As far as I know this person is not having a problem gaining weight. I was just wondering if there are health issues doing this or potential problems down the road? This person is a friend of mine in another state and we keep in touch... Has anybody else had a problem like this? Judie

Guest guest
Many are diabetic that have this surgery...they need to talk to the surgeon about it when doing their consult but unless their health is extremely poor where they would not tolerate surgery itself, I dont think this would prevent them from doing it. Guest guest
I had my gallbladder removed with my open rny. I do not tolerate high fat foods well at all. I am not sure that if it is gallbladder connected or if it is a direct result of the rny. Either way...It is a blessing. I do not need those foods in my life. Guest guest
Having just had the surgery I can't imagine what it would feel like to have a cough at the same time as surgery. I wouldn't do it. You run a risk of getting phenemonia anyway and that would definately increase that risk. It's a tough task to take the deep breaths they need you to take after surgery. Just my little bit of input. Hope you get well very soon! Guest guest
i told my immediate supervisor from the beginning what i was proposing to do, in fact it was last summer when i started the process. she was supportive. i think now that i've had the surgery and everyone can see me melting away in front of their eyes knows i had the surgery. there are probably some at work that don't know. but i too work for a large law firm and some guys aren't as observant...lol. but everyone i work closely with have been very supportive and encouraging. only you know the people you work with and how they may react. do what you feel comfortable in. in my case i've saved my employer money in the long run in the cost of prescriptions that i no longer need to get. one was over $500 every three months...lol. everyone have a great day and enjoy yourself!!!! laurette 4/23/04 open RNY 309/290/248/150 St. Charity Cleveland, Ohio
Guest guest
I just went in and told my boss that I was having the surgery and I would be out for approximately 4 weeks or so. He had lots of questions about the surgery and stuff, so I answered all his questions and he has been good. I wouldn't say great, because I work for an attorney and they are a breed of their own. Just tell your boss the truth.
