> I agree... in regard to a newbie being scared off ...

A friend and I facilitate a group in our area for both pre and post ops.

Sometime I get chills hearing how little some of the post ops actually knew

before they had their surgeries. Very scary.

>

this is scary for all of us, now that I'm working in a gb surgeons practice

and following folks from orientation session to surgery, I do have a little

bit of ability to slow the process if I think I can give them more time to

learn and research while passing along valuable information, articles,

websites, etc. for them to read. I really want my patients to know what to

expect post op and at 2yr. down the road. the process happens so quickly

when insurance pays, literally can go through the process in about 5wk. and

we have two classes they must attend, meet the surgeon pre op, do the psych,

dietician, send medical records. its not a skimpy program and yet I'm seeing

anxious people moving through in just a few weeks. luckily I get to talk to

them several times to assess their knowledge base.

I guess the scarier ones are those who had surgery a few years ago when this

program was not in place, regardless of how long it took them to move

through, some of them are just clueless. I saw a nearly balk lady the other

day and she knew she was not getting enough protein, she was far enough post

op that it wasn't anesthesia related.

for all the lurkers and newbies out there reading please learn as much as

you can and don't interpret anything I've said as a slam, I'm really trying

to help my patients make informed decisions.

This is so cool. I am on another site where this discussion would not be

happening. We would be discussing how wrong some people's opinions are.

That totally stinks especially since I often end up on the wrong end of

the bashing. I am so glad I can come here and explain comments I have

made and not get bashed or slammed or ridiculed.

I'm with your. I'm so glad with this group that we can each have or own

opinions yet still be friends and be able to discuss them. That's what makes a

good support group. Everyone hang it there and thank you for allowing me to

voice my opinion.
