Someone else here on this list said that their psychiatrist said approx the same thing. I have never heard suicide mentioned by any of the health care professionals. Saying that suicide is a " ...quirky possible side effect... " is not accurate. Sheryl >> Thanks, Sheryl - I had never heard a health care professional say that either and wanted to clear up that it wasn't mentioned as a side effect of DS. I understand the psychiatrist saying that people who have depression can have a hard time dealing with the after-effects of sugery. However, I know there are many on many different lists that I am on that have been taking prozac and other depression meds. I think that excess weight exaserbates (sp) depression due to the societal pressures to fit the model image and the rejection one can experience. I also think that many of the feelings of depression are a chemical imbalance which is probably inherited, just as I think the " fat gene " is. At least, medical science now sees that there is a " fat gene " but it still doesn't help anyone understand that this is a disease. I might have depression, but I sure as hell CAN deal with the after-effects of surgery. I know that. I can deal with the after-effects of being obese in a society that sees me as not as valuable, I am able to work and do the things I need to do for myself. So I certainly can deal with the aftereffects of surgery. I think they want to make sure you are able to make intelligent decisions for yourself and understand all the risks - that you aren't just putting your head in the sand only thinking of being thin and not about the decision you are making. However, I have seen others on other lists that shall remain nameless who seemed to think just that way and still passed the psych evaluation! Guest guest
Since there seems to be a lot of discussion about depression on the board lately, I wanted to chime in and make a recommendation. There is a book called THE NOONDAY DEMON by Solomon that I HIGHLY recommend to anyone that wants to learn more about this disease. If you know that you suffer from some sort of depression and have fought it with limited success, this book will really open your eyes and help you understand it better. I bought it after reading the NY Times review and it has been worth every nickel. I have finally recognized in my 40th year that my moods have been up and down all my life for no apparent reason many times. I have also realized that it really doesn't mean that I am a weak or bad person, but have come to realize that this affliction was something that came genetically programmed into my DNA. I am exactly like my Mother and know she suffered greatly with it during her life. My quest now is to understand it better and this book has helped tremendously. It was nominated for a Pulitzer prize and has won 11 literary awards. The author lays bare his life in it and reading it was really an earth shattering, depressing but also uplifting experience for me all in one. If you need to know more about this disease, this book is fantastic. I really needed to try and connect the dots in my life and understand this emotional roller coaster- this book has really helped more than I ever imagined. I wanted to share because I thought it might help someone else too. R in Nashville
Guest guest
Absolutely. If you do a search in yahoo or google or whereever on " tmj and depression " you'll get a ton of results. Also, I once emailed an oral surgeon about this exact question. His reply was, " Pain will cause depression. The changes in your jaw joints cause physical problems that impact on your ability to function. This can also be a cause of depression. A family physician could prescribe anti-depressants. If your depression is severe, you should consult with a psychiatrist. Psychologists usually are not able to prescribe medications, and anyone in the dental field should not do so for depression. " Hope this helps, > > can my depression be linked to my tmj?
