I think it is a whole combination of factors. I have always been able to

wear a smaller size than my weight dictates. I think this is partly because

I carry my weight ALL over. I mean I have very few spots on my body that

don't gain weight evenly when I gain. My fingers, ear lobes, feet, etc. etc.

gain weight as I gain. The only trouble spots I have right now are my arms

and a roll over my waist. I do have a flatt bottom also. However, when I

have gained in the past these areas add weight just in the same amount as the

rest of my body. I wear a size 10 but that is with a " meaty petite " look. I

in no way would say I have a " thin " look. I would say I have a healthy,

meaty (but not fat) look. I also have long legs and a short body for my

height. This makes clothes difficult at times because petites have too short

of legs and regulars are too long in the waist. Many in my position would

obsess about getting to a liter weight, but I am happy given that I am no

longer fat and my weight has been very stable.

at 165 and I couldnt do it? Well, now I can get into size 12 shorts with elastic

waist! Im not far behind the 10 now and Im 162! Maybe when I hit 155 I will

get into the 10? Ill get there!!

When I tell people that folks like you weigh 165 and wear a 12 or 150 and wear a

10, they don't believe me. When I was 16, I weighed 165 and wore a 15/16. Why

do you suppose that MO people wear smaller sizes that " normal folks " at that

same weight? My guess is that our bones are thicker--which, of course, would be

heavier.

Shirley- I also think because we have carried around so much weight,

we have built up a lot of muscle...necessary to support the weight..I

know my legs are very muscular...and muscle is said to weigh almost 3

times what fat does. So in addition to the strong bones...the muscle

mass we have more then likely adds to the higher weight but smaller

size. I hope this makes sense :)

Im guessing you are right, Shirley, Ive heard the same thing, that our

bones are denser than normal after carrying around so much weight all these

years. When I was 20 I fit into size 12......was torture to try to get

into something smaller. At age 22 when I got down to 110 I wore a size 10

and looked sickly! I will never reach 110 now and dont care to. Either our

bones are denser or the clothing industry has switched sizes on us!

Having spent many a late night hour in an osteology (bone) lab, I

can say that while our bones may be bigger, they aren't so much

bigger to account for a lot of variation in sizes. Male bones are

larger, longer and generally thicker than females, but we're

usually talking a centimeter or two.

I've heard that the fashion industry HAS switched sizes on us, but

it depends on, of course, the designer/maker. I wear a 1x in

some makes and up to a 3x in others. Given my measurements,

I theoretically could fit into an 18, but I don't like the feeling. :)

A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, I was 165 and fit

into a size 10. I'm 5'3 " and, at the time, I was going to the gym

5x/week and doing a lot of muscle toning work. Muscle is

denser than fat and toned muscle lays closer to the bone, hence

someone of a " higher " weight can fit into a smaller size because

the muscle lays closer to the bone than fat does...kinda like a

built-in girdle. :) As soon as I stopped doing the muscle work -

and I mean within two weeks - I was back up to a size 12. Sigh...

Sad but true, Pammi. I collect vintage clothing too, and a few weeks ago I

was putting a vintage dress on one of my mannequins. The tag inside the

dress said size 14, but it would barely zip on the mannequin. She's a modern

size 6!

THe clothing manufacturers have adjusted the sizes upward--both in

clothing and shoes>>>

very interesting, Pammi....just as I suspected! I wore size 8 shoe before

surgery and now Im back to size 7! Clothing is another story!
