Yeah, the costs SHOULD be minimal LOL! My main doctors are at the University

of Michigan, and they and the hospital are very, very expensive. Mt Sinai in

NY is also a teaching hospital.

Hi,

Looks like I'm going to have to prove that there are

no doctor's in my insurance network who are skilled

enough to do the DS surgery on me.......I have a bmi

of 57, and after recent posts this summer, do not

really want to be a surgeon's first case or even his

5th. I believe I've read that the learning curve is

70 procedures.

Does anyone know if there is research to document

that? and if so, what is the reference? Thanking u so

much for any help anyone can provide.

Thanks,

_Marie60@...

Well, you know what??? If a doctor was willing to forego his fee AND

the hospital would work with me on costs, I would be willing to be

someone's learning curve. That's how desparate I feel about this

surgery. My knees get worse everyday, and so does my quality of life.

BC/BS of TN is behind this feeling...

Wouldnt it be great if we could get surgery for free!! I don't think it works

that way thou. THe teaching hospitals still have to pay for everything....and

of course the surgeon teaching wants to get paid...LOL The only benefit is you

get extra hands in there helping..><G>

If he was using me to LEARN on, doggone right I'd expect not to pay

his full fee!

You know, I've often thought about calling teaching hospitals and asking

them if they needed patients. You have (hopefully) a skilled surgeons

either doing, or at least assisting in, the proceedure. The costs to you

should be minimal. I wonder if I could actually get a hospital to take me

up on the offer. Seeing how there is only one doc, that I know of, who does

this proceedure in WA, there might not be much demand for my offer.

Somehow I have the feeling that hospitals don't quite feel the same

way about charging 'volunteer' patients the way beautician schools

do... too bad -- it's really the same thing, only more serious!

I was my dr.'s first lap DS patient. He had done many open and many lap RNY.

He accepted the lower rate that my insurance wanted to pay and took it as

full payment. He did an excellant job.
