Guest guest
I was in a similar situation pre-op. My insurance wanted me to try a weight loss program with my medical doctor for 6 months before they would approve surgery. I ended up losing a little weight and it put me right under the requirement. All that proved to me was that I could have some control and the surgery would be perfect for me. I wasn't expecting the surgery to solve all my food and weight issues, I just needed the extra help that surgery gave me. I am 32 and I wanted to reclaim my life before my health problems became permanent. If you lost all your excess weight and kept it off for 2 years then maybe you don't need surgery, but otherwise keep pressing forward. By the way, my surgeon still let me have surgery even though I was a few pounds below. I had been at the higher weight and they just listed that to the insurance company. Good luck! Kathy M. Guest guest
When I have told a few others on AMOS and other lists about the weight loss I get quite a bit of attitude,>>>> I find that to be true, Danine. They also dont like to talk about the DS.. I was on one list of RNYers and all they talked about was how wonderful the RNY was, how they have trouble reaching their goals and how food is still an obsession with them and how they cant eat much nor drink with their meals and they blasted me for saying I was so glad I didnt have their problems and why........then they unsubscribed me for saying that!! LOL They never would put the DS out there for someone who came in looking for answers to making sure there was everything to know about wls.....they pushed only their own as the very best way to go but listening to them moan and groan about their problems I hope alerts others that there is something better out there. As for your 38 BMI.....Ive always said if dieting works for you, go for it....at least one more time. If it doesnt work later and comes back then wls is still here for you and who knows? If you lose your weight and keep it off for a couple years then the techniques would be perfected for you when you are ready again???!!! Dont beat yourself up.....if you are losing be proud of yourself and love yourself for being able to do what the rest of us cant and couldnt do! I am also 32 and have never lost the weight for two years or kept it off. The longest it stayed down was maybe 2 months after losing it. (BTW, yours are the stats I look at enviously when I see you are a post-op ds) Thank you for giving me some hope. I have printed out your post and will share it with my PCP. Do you have other things that may help me prepare for my insurance battle? TIA. Danine'

I must have given them every document written on me under the sun and they still said I hadn't tried enough. I changed insurance and changed surgeons and this time they didn't give me any problems. I didn't have to give them more information or anything, they just approved me based on my surgeons office. I was very lucky and very grateful. Kathy M.
