As far as how long it lasts, every child is different. With my son, it seems to take from a week to two weeks for him to get back to post-diet behavior. I have copied an email I sent to this list May 2001 about our last slip-up (with one cheeto and three pretzels....and it was " major reaction time " ). I hope it helps you to explain to those doubting family members that can't believe that just two crackers can do that.............the reality of it was right in front of their eyes. Ask them, would they give a diabetic candy/sugar and then question if they were having a reaction when their blood sugar level changes drastically? I know, not exactly the same, but in principal it still has a biological affect with both examples. Hang tough, you are doing the right thing for your n. Elsie (in Texas) ********************************************* copy of my previous post 5/2001 to gfcfkids: Just wanted share our experience with slip ups this week. My son has been GFCF for a year now and has done very well, not cured by any means but with this latest infringement(s) it has hit home with us just how far he has come on this diet. We are in the initial process of assessment with the school system for our son's placement in the local PPCD program for this fall. The teacher asked me the other day what happens to him (our son) if he gets a hold of something that he shouldn't have. It has been so long since he has had anything with G or C, it was almost hard for me to explain why this diet is so important. MAN, after 3 slip ups this last week, I could write a novel for her on why this diet is critical for him. In a years span I guess I had forgotten some of the behaviors and physical things that happens to him. It all came flooding back yesterday. First of all, he snatched a cheeto about 4 days ago, and then two more infractions 3 days ago with 3 pretzels. That's all it took. Yesterday he was WILD, WILD, WILD. Things that resurfaced: 1) Really irritable 2) Throwing things 3) Knocking chairs over 4) The word " no " had no meaning to him 5) Running away like there was no tomorrow 6) Nothing could be on a table top-must be knocked off as hard as he could sling it 7) Hitting at me (never was a real hitter) 8) Awakening in the night (again) 9) Terrible GI pains 10) Laughing (when he was being reprimanded) 11) Non-compliant with everything I'm thinking, " Who is this child " !! That's just the main things. FYI, I did get EnzymAid in him on the cheeto infraction, but could not get more into him on the last two. Just wanted to share this for those that think this may not be worth all the trouble. In our case...the reality is, my son is a different person due to this diet and moral of our story..... No matter how many people (professional/family members, etc.) may try to tell you you're wacko for being such a fanatic about this diet, for some kids it is their lifeline into a life of feeling better, getting better and in some cases - recovery. Sorry to be so long. Hope everyone has a great weekend with NO slipups. Elsie (in Texas) P.S. n, if you happen to read this...I'm going to the survey and report our experience with this. Josh is pretty sensitive to it, and it doesn't take much to get him regressing.. Turn that around and say " wow, 2 crackers did that? It's good that we keep him GFCF then isn't it? " . Guest guest
Debbie, Yes your child's behaviors could be from the 2 crackers. The first day of summer school something happened to JJ. No one will admit it but we think he got the wrong lunch. JJ started vomiting 30 minutes after getting home. He had sever flu symptoms for the next 10 days. We took him to the dr., Flu just give him fluids. We had an appt with a specialist for Down Syndome---JJ was put in the hospita for 3 daysl. Turns out he had a major food infringement, moderate dehydration, very sever gastritis , all trigger by the wrong foods. Got the bill from the hospital yesterday--$6300!!!! & Garry, parents of (10 ds), (9 ds), JJ (7 ds/autism/celiac), (6 ds/ADHD/Celiac), and Esther (4 ds). All adopted.
