Guest guest
My son went to CAMP CELIAC last year! (NOT FOR GFCF) This is a camp for KIDS WITH CELIAC Diease ONLY! This year it is also in Rhode Island and I think the kids are there this week, actually~! It was a wonderful experience for him, he felt like he was home, with his own people. It was the first year, two nights! All other summer camp experiences with SAFE FOOD! and friends and adults that understand! He didn't go this year because they changed it to a 6 day event because it was so successful! He will go next year when he is another year older and not so afraid of being away from mommy for that long, and thunder and lightning! A camp like that for GFCF kids and parents would be great! If parent were included, unlike Camp Celiac(Volunteer parents do help but only a few), it would cut down on the need for too much extra care given that many of these kids are special needs kids on the GFCF diet. I could never send my son for a week alone, but with me, we are ready, just tell us when and where! GOD BLESS, Laurie Renke
Guest guest
In July my 10yo went to Camp Lotsafun at Eagle Lake, CA. It's a social skills camp for kids on the spectrum, including ADHD & NLD. A number of kids were gfcf, and the camp kitchen accommodated the diet (yippee!), altho Ian reports that kids who did not self-enforce the diet snuck some non-gfcf stuff into their mouths - with nasty results. And some counselors were totally ignorant about the diet, offering things like nutrigrain bars to Ian. I camped nearby and visited a couple of times to make sure Ian was handling being away from me at night. Some kids only attended during the day. Some parents were camp volunteers. The camp director was very accommodating about individual needs. This was the first year of the social skills camp, and obviously there were a number problems that needed to be sorted out. Hopefully, next year things will go smoother. www.camplotsafun.com > > My son went to CAMP CELIAC last year! (NOT FOR GFCF) ... A camp like that for GFCF kids and parents would be great!
