Guest guest
I would encourage you to try diet and eliminate allergens. I have 2 I/2 year old twins - one NT (What DO those initials stand For?) with 8 food allergies and eczema-He was our " high need baby " until eliminating ALL Sources of allergens-His behavior, sleep and disposition improved- Completely clear skin-no dairy, wheat, soy, oats, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, mustard or strawberries. Some I figured out, some with blood tests. A new test, Immunocap, is supposed to not have any false positives according to Health magazine, April 2001. Now I wait until my sons need to have blood drawn before testing for new suspected allergens for a baseline. Supposedly you can tell when they may be growing out of it by comparing later tests. After this restrictive diet and my sisters and nephew being diagnosed with celiac (and my mom with fibromialgia) it was a no brainer to try diet for my other son. He has egg and peanut allergies. He is very mild PDD-NOS-we saw improvements 3 weeks into no casein and we continue to notice the little symptoms (swingning, counting frequently, etc) are fading and disappearing as we get more involved in eliminating hidden gluten. It can't hurt. My son started a new early intervention teacher today and she said his eye contact was completey normal and appropriate. The improvements just sneak up on us. I have similiar concerns and am looking for a nutritionist experienced with GFCF diet to evaluate our meals. We found boys allergies at under 1 year so they've never had a real pizza or ice cream so luckily they don't know any different. Hope this helps. sorry I didn't erase other message to people doing digest-I'mnew to internet and don't know how.

Guest guest
Any doctor can order the tests-it would be best to find a DAN doctor{one wheo specializes in treating autism and PDD} but if your regular doctor will order the blood test that would work too. I thought > the list was a little extreme considering no testing > was done. I have had on the Feingold diet for > a couple of years, but not with a lot of results (some > slight changes). These allergy issues do sound like allergy and phenol intolerance issues. Here is my site link for more information on the phenol issues. It may be that you would not have to remove those foods, but try one of the other recommendations I have indicated here that do help some children with these issues. This would be for phenol intolerance issues [like dark circles] but NOT for a true allergy issue. http://home.pacbell.net/cscomp/phenol.htm This list you have indicated, however, is not extreme from my own personal point of view, as all of those foods and MORE, I have had to remove from my son's diet, and actually the diets of three of my four children, but the other two are not autistic. I was able to add back some, but not all, of these foods with the use of enzymes. But my children still cannot have gluten, casein, nuts and seeds, and high phenols. If you would like to try testing, you can ask any doctor, or use one of the DAN doctors from this list. http://www.autism.com/ari/danlist.html If you would like to look at tests that can be done, here is a lab which has a relatively comprehensive list, altho you would not have to use this lab specifically. http://www.greatplainslaboratory.com/ I am debating whether or not to give > up the Feingold diet and try the GFCF diet. If you are not seeing results with Feingold diet, it may be because your son still needs another food/s removed, or other ideas considered. So I think you are correct to be considering gfcf. I am > interested in any feedback you can give me regarding > this diet and children similar to mine (not autistic, > but DSI and/or Aspergers). Is it successful and if so > how? Or you can make your own bread if you are so inclined, there are several recipes that people have who can share with you. > Is it worth it all? What were your symptoms before > diet, and what has improved? Is the improvement > solely to the GFCF diet? My son was very low functioning autistic, and now he is no longer autistic. He would still qualify as PDD because he is not yet age appropriate, but he basically acts like a typical child, altho younger than his chronological age. I can attribute this solely to diet, because I do the therapies and things myself, and before this diet my son took FOREVER to learn anything, but now he learns things just like a typical child, and on the first try. I know these are alot of > questions, but I am so torn. My son hated being on > Feingold, and this diet seems so much more limiting. > I am scared to do another diet change. Some kids, especially AS or higher-functioning kids, are using enzymes instead of diet. This works for some but not all kids. Guest guest
Hi Phyllis, We've had our son on this diet for about 6 weeks now. His test scores for Gluten & Casein were very high. He is not autistic, but has speech delays and sensory Integration Dysfunction. We are hoping the diet will help with the speech issues. So far we've noticed that he is a calmer and tries very hard to tell us what he wants. We are still new to this and always looking for advise also. It's nice to know that we aren't alone. good luck, Rhonda

Guest guest
SID & Aspergers are autistic spectrum disorders. (ADHD is also considered by a growing number of people to be on the spectrum.) My son has been gfcf & rice-free since 3/00, also rotating corn & soy. Since then, we've also cut back hugely on artificial colors & preservatives and began chelation in 8/00. He was dx'd aspergers/NLD with sensory issues, a lot of GI tract problems, respiratory allergies and depression. He went through a dramatic withdrawal period on the diet and rejected most of the gfcf food I prepared. Now 10 1/2, he knows he has made great progress and self-enforces the diet. (Also getting very good at reading food ingredient lists.) He no longer misses the old food and finds the smell of milk & cheese " disgusting " . School lunch - he gets a gfcfrf lunch at school (USDA school meals program requires meal accomodations at no additional charge if a doctor states they are required.) Other meals - look like a " normal " menu, just don't have gluten, casein or rice. For example, breakfast might be gfcf cereal with milk sub, fruit, sausage patty (Shelton's ground turkey mixed with Italian seasoning), and water/tea/or almond milk. Costs -initially gfcfrf cost was high b/c I relied on prepared foods & mixes from HFS. Now I mostly shop at regular stores and place bulk orders through a food co-op. My cooking skills have increased, and I make great cookies & cakes for special occasions, thanks to gfcfrecipes. Bread - I like cornstarch bread (search archives for recipe), but Ian doesn't like any gfcf bread, so we just don't eat it any more unless I make it for guests - who love it! Improvements - everything. He looks good, feels good, isn't anxious or depressed, keeps up with the NT kids at karate, made the honor roll (one accomodation - he answers tests orally), no longer wears baggy clothes, wears shoes & underwear w/o complaint (that was a big change!), asks for haircuts (another big change in SI), sleeps through the night, and helps around the house. DOE is trying to decertify him. I attribute all improvements to gfcfrf, but the mercury chelation quickly boosted the improvements to a higher level and ended the meltdowns (which had lessened in intensity & frequency on the diet). However, while the diet & chelation cleared his mind, he needed help to catch up on lost time, including going into the community with a therapeutic aide to learn age appropriate social skills. Nutrition - we use Nu-thera, cod liver oil, and powdered calcium, which I add to whatever I'm making. However, we are eating healthier than ever before, so we've gained - not lost - nutrients on this diet. I remember how overwhelming the diet (and the food bill) was at first. Honestly, it's second-nature now, and people enjoy being invited to dinner at our house. Just take it in manageable steps, and you'll be fine. ....I am interested in any feedback you can give me regarding > this diet and children similar to mine (not autistic, > but DSI and/or Aspergers). Is it successful and if so > how? What types of foods do you give them - > especially for lunches at school?
