Guest guest
Hi everyone! I have been walking about 2 miles a day since one week out of my surgery and now I'm 6 weeks out and riding my Nordic track 30 minutes the days I don't walk. My question is - those two exercises (walking and nordic) are great for cardiovascular and to burn calories, but has anyone focused on exercises that will help the skin on their stomach stretch back in??? I am 29 years old and several people have told me that my skin should be pretty elastic....I don't know what to do to help my skin... Any suggestions on specific exercises to help my sagging tummy???? Thanks so much!!! Mickey L Surgery 7/31/01 Dr. Inabnet pre op - 367 today - 322 45 pounds gone forever!!!!! Guest guest
SIMPLEST AND MOST EFFECTIVE EXERCISES TO HELP SKIN: 1. Extend arm; grasp opened container of water; bring container to lips; drink; keep repeating as often as you can. -- Hydration helps to keep skin elastic. 2. Apply sunscreen before going outside; cover up (hats, long sleeves, etc.) -- Ultraviolet light ruins skin. As for creams, etc., I use " Lotil " that is obtainable from the Vermont Country Store (online). YMMV. --Steve --
Guest guest
I've talked to several dermatologists (not plastic surgeons) about skin elasticity and whether or not it is likely to shrink. The general verdict? Nope. The longer you've had fat cells filling out your skin, the less likely it is that the skin will shrink back. Obviously, the more fat cells you have filling out your skin, the bigger the skin folds will be after you lose the fat and losing weight slowly (as opposed to quickly like with surgery) doesn't seem to make much of a difference. I guess that's why some women seem to shrink back okay after a single, early (younger) pregnancy. There are an abundance of cremes, butters, lotions, etc that will make your skin less dry, supple and soft, but nothing that will turn it into cling wrap! = The younger you are, the more likely it is that the skin will shrink somewhat, but that's because the proteins (collagen and elastin) are heavily present and produced. However, " younger " was defined by some of the dermatologists I spoke with as " early 20s " or soon after you reach your adult size. For me that was around the age of 20. Two docs told me that after losing a lot of weight, your skin will shrink as much as it ever will within one year post-weight loss. When I was 29, I lost almost 100lbs on diet and the skin sag was pretty impressive! Of course, I gained it all back so I'm really glad I didn't have plastic surgery at the time, but I'm penciling it in for the future when I'm switched! -
Guest guest
Thanks AJ - I guess it's a fear that I have the more weight that I lose. I am trying very hard to exercise at least 5 times a week. I also think that may be one reason my weight loss has slowed the last couple weeks...muscle weighs more than fat. (or I'm hoping) I read a really cool profile of someone on the DS website before my surgery - she said that the more weight she lost the more she enjoyed exercising. I really want that too!! =) Thanks everyone for your support!!
