Guest guest
Hey all...I am a long time lurker and have gotten lots of great info and insights from everyone. I have an under-developed lower jaw, and I go in tomorrow for BSSO, which seems like baby stuff compared to what most of you have gone through. I will not be wired closed either, but will be banded and have a splint for 2 weeks. Just got my zip and squeeze today for those 2 weeks. After that I can go to soft foods. Another shocker today was when I went to the hospital to pre-register, I was prepared to self pay, but they told me that BC/BS had informed them that I was 100% covered!!! I better go buy a lotto ticket!! Good Luck to all that are waiting, and speedy recovery for all who are done!! Tammy D in CT :-)
Guest guest
Hi, I am 3 weeks post op. I am banded shut. I got my first two bands one week after surgery. Before that, I wasn't banded or wired. I only had the splint in my mouth. My jaws (I had upper/lower/genio) were immobilized with resorbable rigid fixation. I meet my my OS tomorrow and expect to probably get more bands. Lucky me. I am hoping to get everything off around 6 weeks post surgery. I was able to move my mouth as soon as I had reawakened after surgery. I am on a liquid/very soft/non-chew diet right now. Additionally, I have numbness... My surgeon said that my nerves are completely intact and fine, it's just a matter of time for healing for them to start generating feeling again. He mentioned that regaining sensation could take months. My numbness is uneven and is in varying degrees around my face and in my momouth. My lower jaw was extended, so the surgeon said this is common after the nerve is stretched. Anyway, we're not all wired!!! Good luck and keep asking your questions as they come up! Take care, Katja > > Hi all - > I've noticed that most everyone who has posted about after surgery > has been wired shut. Guest guest
Many are -- but my surgeon, who'd done 1,700 orthognathic surgeries by the time he got to me in 2002 -- hasn't wired anybody shut in about a decade, he told me. Most people, I think, do at least have some bands, some tightly and some loosely. I left the hospital with neither. I do have three little screws in each side of my lower jaw, which was advanced. I did eventually have some pretty potent bands from him, but only two, and they did not hold my mouth shut. They were to support the jaw. I had one of the easiest recoveries ever. No numbness, not much swelling and not much pain. I think that my most excellent and experienced surgeon had a most excellent morning, and so did I. The gods were with us. Thank you! > > Hi all - > I've noticed that most everyone who has posted about after surgery > has been wired shut. Guest guest
Congratulations!! What a nice surprise. I had a friend that had the same thing done and after a week she was great and it seemed like a walk in the park. Good luck.
