Guest guest
from the sore?? Not good, not good at all. Treat this aggressively, staph is not a good thing at all. I don't want to scare you, but my dad has had a staph infection for over 3y now. It looks like they got it the last time he had surgery, they took out the cadaver bone that they'd put in in the first place and he's getting better but we still don't know. He hasn't worked much if at all this whole time and it's really turned my parent's lives upside down. I think he's had like 10 surgeries of various sorts to either stop growth/drain/repair/remove/clean out his wound. Not to mention the time he spent with a gaping open wound that had to be packed with sponges and drains so it could heal from the inside out. Serious stuff. Staph can be deadly and she should be seen by an infectious disease specialist... at least if it was my daughter that's what I'd insist on after going through this with my dad. I would not trust 100% any general doc on this one... better to be safe than sorry IMO and make sure she's getting the proper treatment for that particular strain of Staph. If the sore is on the heel cut out the back of the shoe!!! you don't need the new markells, just a sharp knife. Seriously. It does NOT ruin the shoes. Do it today, don't let that shoe rub that sore any longer. If you need info how to do this there have been threads here you can search or there's info in the tips document in the files section but it's simply a matter of cutting the hole where the sore is. let me know if you have problems but I don't think you will. Exacto knife should work fine. Guest guest
Wow. I'm going to Children's Hospital tomorrow to get Maddie's impressions done for the s. When I see Dr. Kasser tomorrow, I'll ask him to order some tests or refer us to a infectious disease specialist, just to make sure. I think it was just the beginning of a staph infection, so hopefully we caught it in time. Maddie hasn't been wearing the shoes since Friday, so we've probably lost some correction, but I'd rather her sore/infection get better first, then we'll catch up. Since starting the Keflex, her fever has gone down and the sore looks better, but I'll definitely make sure that the docs check to make sure the Keflex is the right antibiotic. Before Maddie's pediatrician had me fill the antibiotic, he had me call Children's to see what they used to treat staph infections because of the different strains of staph. Thanks for telling me about the seriousness of the infection. I wasn't sure how bad it could be, but now that I know, I'll make sure the doctors agressively make sure all the staph is gone so poor Maddie doesn't have to go through any more than she has to. Do you think they'll try to recast her while we wait for the s? Is that wise with an infected sore? I just want to make sure I'm on top of things tomorrow, so I'll ask all the right questions. Of course, I'm scared now, but I'd rather be scared and informed than not scared and ignorant, so I thank you for the warning. I'm sorry your dad has had a tough time of it. I'll also bring the Markells and the dbb tomorrow and see if the brace shop will cut out the heels while we wait for the s . If they won't, I'll do it myself. No matter what, we're going to move to the s because she has so many sores and bruises from the Markells, I just want her to be comfortable. Thanks so much for the advice, and I'll update you tomorrow on our visit. If you read this tonight, let me know if you think they should recast her with the sore, or not. Just want to be prepared. - Michele 5/18/02 and Maddie 9/6/05 bcf frogabog wrote: from the sore?? Not good, not good at all. Treat this aggressively, staph is not a good thing at all. Guest guest
Hi , That's good, keflex is a strong antibiotic from what I know. I'm sure that she'll be fine. Did they by chance culture it so they KNOW what strain it is? I don't know how many times I had to get on my mom's case because they didn't culture my dad assuming he was ok. It takes a week or so to culture this stuff from what I know. I cannot be sure about the cast but they absolutely can make a hole in the cast over the sore if there's a question. It is done by squishing the cast over the sore while it's hardening and then cutting out the softened cast material. I think that would be the best choice if you don't want to loose correction and if it were me I'd want that sore completely healed before going back to shoes. Even the PM's. So it could be a few weeks till it's all skinned over and healthy again. Also, I'd want to be able to see the sore as it heals to make sure nothing is festering. Ask about the options when you go back but a healing cast if it can be done on such a sore would be the best of all worlds, could save her a couple weeks of casting when it's started over again if she can maintain the correction she's got right now. hope to hear good news from you soon - and don't worry too much about the staph... like you said just be warned and proactive and it'll all be fine. hugs! Guest guest
many children have been re-casted with sores. With a regular sore, it's perfectly fine. An infected one... maybe not. But most sores are healed with healing casts, this is normal. My daughter had healing casts for nearly 2w and did nothing but get better. Then I made the sore again by not putting the shoes on properly... then we cut the hole (the orthotist did actually) and she was happy, happy, happy... immediately lol. The sore then healed (again) over the next 3w and she wore her holed shoes till she needed new ones. Guest guest
thanks, he is feeling better and has a bit of spring in his step now that we haven't seen for a looooooong time. He's off the $1,000/day antibiotics now and we're hoping or the best. Apparently they didn't think that the infection could live in the cadaver bone because there's no blood flow there. wrong... it didn't get the antibiotics because there's no blood flow in cadaver bones! grrrr... So that bone is gone and hopefully all is well. Thanks for thinking of him, so sweet :~} Kori At 03:05 PM 12/26/2005, you wrote: >Wow Kori, > >Your dad is Still dealing with staph?
