Hey Everyone, I'm back after a long (and much needed) break from this discussion

board. It was a year ago next week that I found out I needed braces/surgery

etc. and now a year later I am preparing for the big day. I can't wait to get

this over with so I can start asking hwen the braces will come off.

Has anyone on the board had surgery in Nova Scotia? I'd love to hear what to

expect. I will be going for my pre op clinic soon and I am really

scared/looking forward to that day - can't wait to ask all my questions so I can

be nice and freaked out. Hopefully they wil llet me take somone with me to keep

track of everything!

Here is the question about hte hooks - I have my adjustment tomorrow with the

ortho (they are still widening a gap on each side on the upper for surger

incisions - hopefully they will have it ready in time!) but when I called thye

mentioned that they woiuld be putting on surgical hooks at the same time. What

are/where are surgical hooks? Are they as bad as the bands I have on my molars?

Should I delay getting them attached as late as possible or are they the kind of

thing that has to be on your teeth for a couple weeks to ensure they are stable?

I dont want to have more hardware in my mouth if its not nesicary unti the

surgery (5 weeks away).

Thanks fo rhte help - hopefully i will be more vocal as the surgery approaches!

Kev

Hi,

Surgical hooks are little hooks that get attached to the wires, and

are used later on for rubber bands that will guide your bite into

place after the surgery (if you're wired, they might be used to hold

the wires in place, but I'm not sure about that, since I'm not wired).

They're really not so bad. You can look at my pictures (under

" Irene " ), and you can see the hooks in the " my bite " picture. Some

orthos delay putting in the surgical hooks as long as possible, but

mine wanted me to get used to them, so I got them about a month prior

to surgery (lucky me :)). They're actually not that bad - more

cleaning, for sure, but with enough wax not too difficult to get used to.

Irene.
