Guest guest
Steph, I'm sorry to hear about your surgeon not being available. Where are you from? Maybe one of us could recommend someone. I just got my braces on 9 days ago and feel almost " normal " again. Other than I've developed this slurpping habit! And, I'm losing weight because I can't stand the feel of food on them (a good thing for now!). Your questions are quite normal. In the back of my mind, I hope the braces would be enough to correct my bite. But, I'm certain they won't. I do have to wait and see what the braces correct before they can determine if I need upper and lower or just lower. Since I'm so new to this journey, I can't offer a lot of advice. I wish you luck in whatever you decide. Guest guest
Thank you Diane... I'm in Phx, AZ. I'm sure my ortho or regular dentist will have a recommendation. Currently, I'm torn between " I want this over and done NOW " and being scared. Today is a bit better. My mouth isn't quite as sore as it was yesterday. I remember the first week with my braces as well. OUCH. I don't remember hurting *this* much since then. Or maybe (like childbirth) I just forget between appointments. LOL Normally my pain tolerance is pretty high. Slurpping, drooling, chewing with your mouth open and sounding like a drunk when talking... Yep normal for braces. After each adjustment, I feel like I need to learn how to speak all over again. Think I will go slurp some tapioca pudding for breakfast. And I feel like doing some quilting today. A good sign. ;-) Hope everyone else is doing better this morning. Stephany > Steph, > > I'm sorry to hear about your surgeon not being available. Where are you > from? Guest guest
It's most unusual, I think, for an ortho to refer a patient to an oral surgeon who no longer does orthognathic surgery... Geez. They really work closely, don't they? That's a shame, because it's best when your surgeon and your ortho work closely together, imho. I'd want to talk with my ortho about this, and ask him whether he's worked with anybody through one of these before. I'd also ask him for other referrals, but I'd be talking as well with other friends in the dental profession, with lay or other friends who have had oral surgery, or whose children have had wizzies removed, to see if you come up with any recommendations. And do ask your general dentist, too. You also might ask hospitals you might like to use what oral surgeons have privileges at them. I had my doubts about having the surgery, but of all the dentists I asked (five total) every one of them recommended the ortho, and only one had reservations about the surgery -- he was concerned about whether the tmj pain might increase. (It has not.) If you are in doubt, though, tell your ortho right away, because they move the teeth into a different position for surgery than they would if you do not have it. Guest guest
I thought it was odd too. But when I first consulted with the OS a year ago, he was doing the surgeries. When I called this week to follow up (because I'm getting close to ready for the surgery), I was told that he no longer did the surgery. And this was just decided late last month. So... I've put my regular dentist on the case, my ortho is looking and I'm plowing through my preferred care doctor lists to see if I can find an oral surgeon. I have medical and dental insurance, so I'm looking at both books. It's the best I can do. On calling my regular dentist and my orthodontist, they both said they were checking out OSs and would call me back. I just want it done over summer vacation. That way I have an extended period for rest and recovery. Not to mention I'd have my jaw unwired/banded/splinted/whatever before I started teaching in the fall. Otherwise, I will elect to wait until October when I have my fall break. That's only two weeks. I'm feeling better today. A bit less freaked out. A bit less pain from the orthodontist appointment. Am sucking on orajel out of the tube! LOL And I'm back to " if I'm gonna do it, I might as well do it right! " Thanks for listening. I am really encouraged by your sucesses and the honest appraisal of the drawbacks and side effects. Steph
