Guest guest
Hi, I have been wired for 4 weeks now. When I woke up my nose was clogged with blood clots. I could breath through my mouth but it felt very forced. I think the anxiety didn't help much either. I was so afraid of choking because I was breathing through my mouth and didn't even want to swallow my meds. They brought me sudifed which I had to take by cup. It had that cough syrup taste that feels like your throat burns a little which freaked me out and I refused to take it once (don't do that) I did get some sleep with the morphene and sudifed that I got in me. The worst was when the resident came in because I was paniced (about breathing) and he suctioned my nose. That really didn't help as much as the sudifed. The thing that I didn't expect was how claustrophobic I felt with my mouth wired. Like my tongue was scared of the small space. However, my OS told me about the fear of not being able to breath as I was being pushed from the holding room to the surgery room. I think it is mind over matter. Panicing made my breathing worse and crying makes a clogged nose impossible to use. I would say stay calm and breathe deeply through mouth, take all your meds, and maybe you can sleep it off. When I got home Afrin and Saline nose spray helped although after 2 weeks they lost their affect so I relyed on steamy showers and benedryl or sudifed. I must admit I am really having a hard time right now because I have a cold and am stuffed up. Just be prepared and have some vics vapor rub, steamy hot tea to breathe in, and the thing that helped most clean all the blood out the first week and you will be breathing fine. I became an obsessive nose cleaner with q tips and peroxide. Everyone is different so you may not react negatively at all. Good Luck, I've been there and it can be scary but we are here for you. Guest guest
Hi , Do you know definitely that you'll be wired after surgery? After my surgery, I had only a splint in at first. My nose was packed, so thank goodness I could keep my mouth open to breath. The dry mouth and throat kind of sucked along with having to try to suction out a lot, but breathing for the most part really was ok. I had that suction wand in my drugged little fist the entired time I think constantly suctioning out my mouth! Anyway, it got even better when they pulled out the packing in my nose. I didn't get banded until one week post surgery. So, I think you might want to find out what to expect exactly when you wake up because many of us here have had quite differing experiences. For me I was vomiting all night and miserable because of that, but I was ok with the breathing. My nose has certainly had congestion, but never to the point where an airway was completely closed off. Anyway, that is my experience after surgery. Good luck regardless. I hope you have no problems afterwards!! Guest guest
Hi Katja, Thanks for your reply.Yes, I'm definitely having the dreaded wires! Having a brace fitted on Tuesday & the only reason thats happening is so that I can be wired after surgery. Was a bit shocked on hearing that news as I expected to have the braces on for at least a year before surgery.I guess its better in a way as it speeds up the waiting time for surgery! I'm also worried about the swelling & what I'll look like atfer the swelling subsides ( whenever that will be! ) I did get a computer generated image of what to expect but I was told this was only a rough guide. Is it normal to feel absolutely terrified yet totally excited at the same time? Its only 3 weeks to go till surgery! Most days I feel fine & focused but other times I get so scared & feel like such a baby! Thanks again, katja750 <no_reply > wrote: Hi , Do you know definitely that you'll be wired after surgery? Guest guest
Hi jacqueline, That is great that you'll get the surgery over with right away. It IS completely normal to feel excited and terrified! I had all kinds of emotions leading up to my surgery. Ultimately,I was excited to get the show on the road. I had taken great care in chosing my surgeon, and finally made myself let go and trust him and stop being so anxious about it. Guess it also depends on what you're feeling scared about. So far, I have had no regrets and have been pleased with my choice in my OS and the results as far as I can tell. I was scared though about what I was facing with recovery. It's hard, because each person is different so you only have a general idea what to expect. I did not expect everything I went through, and expected other things that never happened. BUT, you get through them. YOu deal which each thing as you face it and you get through it. Time continues to pass, thank goodness!!! So don't worry!! You'll do great! If you trust your surgeon, then let go and relax and trust him! He'll take care of you.... And yes, I was pretty excited too!! I had been waiting a long long time for this surgery. The swelling subsides over the first or second week. I am two weeks post op today. The worst of my swelling is down and has been down for the past few days. I have more residual lingering swelling these days. It wasn't too bad, but can be uncomfortable. But the swelling, like everything else, does pass! Take care and keep in touch! Guest guest
The one who can tell you is your surgeon -- or perhaps one of his assistants. Maybe you won't be wired (unless he's already told you you will!), and will be banded, or maybe nothing at all.. If you are wired and need to vomit, let it move on through. It should be nothing but liquid, assuming you've done what you've been told, and it will just move right on out. If you know that you're prone to have trouble with nausea after being anesthetized, be sure to tell your doc, your anesthesiologist and your nurse. There are things they can do to help prevent/stop the nausea... They will tell you what to do about nasal congestion, but the conventional wisdom is some sort of decongestant, perhaps a nose spray -- but not too much of the nose spray decongestant and not for more than a day or two at a time, or you'll wind up worse off with a rebound; a vaporizer; hot showers or baths when you're able... And I will hope that you'll be among the many who have very little actual pain! Best, Cammie > > Hi everyone,I'm & this is my first time checking in. > My surgery date is 15 April 05 at the Southern General Hospital in > Glasgow.I'm having upper jaw advancement with impaction & lower jaw > reduction. Here's my biggest fear - WIRES POST SURGERY!!! > Most people are banded after surgery. Is there anyone out there who > can tell me what to expect? > Cant quite get my head around how i'm gonna be able to breathe when I > wake up.Had lots of reassurance from my surgeon but I'm still not > convinced!
