Surgeons do not always have to cut that nerve (I'm thinking it's the

alveolar nerve, but I may not have the right name) to do a lower

advancement. When my surgeon did a BSSO, he simply teased the jaw

apart, carefully protecting that nerve, and slid it forward on itself.

The happy result was that I never had any numbness.

I do know that some surgeons do a different " vertical " cut on the

lower. It may be that they have to cut the nerve to do that one -- I

dunno. I do believe that some surgeons believe that it is less likely

to cause numbness, and I think I have read that it requires being

wired shut...
