I'm new w/ Kaiser and I wanted to see Dr. Poor & O'ryan but I could

not find them in the kaiser physician directory. Is Dr. Poor & Dr.

O'ryan at kaiser oakland are under head & neck surgery? Do I need a

referral from my primary doctor to see them?

Dr. Oryan is my doctor, I am scheduled for surgery on March 4, 2005.

She is with the Maxillofacial Surgery Department. Her number is 510

752-6823. I think you do need a referral from your primary doctor.

I am having my lower jaw moved back, it appears to have grown out of

shape in the last 5 years. I am 58.

Hello:

I had my surgery with Dr. O' in December. She's wonderful!

In order to see her I needed to be seen first by my primary care

doctor, who then referred me to head and neck surgery. They then

referred me to oral and maxillofacial in Oakland. You might be able

to get a referral directly from your primary care physician.

You can't actually make an appointment with the oral/maxillofacial

folks directly. When they get the referral from your doc or head and

neck, they'll call you to schedule. They are very busy so don't be

surprised if you can't get an appointment for a few months. Also, Dr.

O' seems to be the busiest, so you may be seen by one of the

other doctors, Dr. Poor or Dr. Wagner. I understand both are great.

Good luck! I had a great experience with Kaiser Oakland.

Hi MCS,

Not only did I have my surgery at Kaiser Oakland, we have the same

initials! Anyway, I had my surgery with Dr. O' in December and I

am very happy with the outcome. I too was nervous beforehand. Since

they cover all of Northern California, their office is incredibly

busy and you don't get a whole lot of time with your surgeon pre-op.

This made me a bit wary and I asked lots of questions on this very

message board to try to guage just how good these doctors were.

Everyone responded with loving praise. These docs are that good. They

only do orthognathic surgery and they do about 300 a year. Dr. O'

in particular is well-known nationally and internationally. I

understand the other doctors, Poor and Wagner, are also very good.

And the residents are great, too. What I'm trying to say is you're in

very good hands at Kaiser Oakland.

I had lower jaw surgery to correct my underbite. I won't lie -- the

first week to 10 days were rough post-op, but it was all down-hill

after that. I was back at work after four weeks, but I honestly could

have gone back at three. I was back to running at six weeks, even

though Dr. O' said I could run at two weeks post-op (I was too

nervous!).

You sound like you're worried about the cosmetic side of things. I

would urge you to discuss your concerns with Dr. O', she's very

sensitive to this stuff. My surgery actually corrected my long face,

and while it could be argued my face chould be even less long

(shorter?), I'm not complaining. This is a functional, not cosmetic,

surgery. That's really important to understand. In the end, all

they're doing is fixing your bite. There can be cosmetic benefits (my

profile is greatly improved), but it's not really ever guaranteed.

Good luck with your surgery. I really can't recommend those folks

more highly!

Maddie

P.S. You might also want to search the archives of this message

board. Lots of Kaiser Oakland patients post here.
