Guest guest
Chris This is something I experienced as well, and had to substitute other foods for those recommended by Elaine for our intro. diet. There is also a lot of detoxing going on in the first few weeks on SCD, so you may also be dealing with that as well -- in other words, you may not see an immediate change in your symptoms. The purpose of the intro. diet is to eat foods that are soft and easy-to-digest. After a few days our digestive symptoms generally diminish a bit and we begin to add foods back. But some of us have digestions that can't tolerate the cheesecake, can't tolerate yogurt, can't tolerate carrots, can't tolerate ground meat. Speaking from my experience. So we find other foods that are easiest on our digestions, and stick to them for the 2 to 3 days we're on the intro. diet. There is some trial and error involved in SCD, learning which permitted foods are best for our own bodies, depending on our stage in the healing journey. The suggested foods on pecanbread are just that, suggestions. I didn't use the stage lists when I started SCD, because I knew my digestion wouldn't cope with many of the stage 1 foods. So I just worked at experimenting to figure out what worked for my body. But once I found my core group of foods, I stuck with them for 2 years and restored my gut ecology, improving a lot of health issues. I don't have an IBD, but do have functional upper GI disorders so I can't achieve remission but I have been able to learn symptom management. Which is all I can ask for and thanks to SCD I've achieved it. Kim M. SCD 6 years >>>>>>>> This is my first post. Guest guest
Sometimes the diet needs to be tweaked to your needs. I could not tolerate carrots either. The broths are the most helpful. Another helpful thing is to puree the foods so they are absorbed better. You can puree vegetables and even the chicken and add it back into the soup. Some people have difficulty with eggs sometimes. The book is a great start, and many people are here to help you personalize the diet. At the beginning, it is sometimes trial and error to find what you can tolerate. A food diary is helpful. Keep posting specific questions here. PJ > > Hello, > > This is my first post. I started the SCD diet a couple of days ago and have noticed my symptoms have actually gotten worse. Some history: > > I've been in a UC flare since mid-November. With prescription drugs (Prednisone), as of last week I was able to get bowel movements down to 2-3x per day, with some formation, but still a very slight amount of blood. > > Two days ago I started the SCD. I had actually tried starting it about a month ago but did not do it correctly; I basically jumped in too fast and just picked foods off the list. I went back to the " low residue " type of diet for a couple of weeks. Then earlier this week decided to try the SCD again, but this time do it the right way. > > With this in mind, since Tuesday I have followed the " Introductory Diet " to the letter (although the " cheesecake " I made didn't turn out too good). > > Anyway, since starting my bowel movements have actually gotten much worse. No formation at all, complete diarrhea, and actually a little bit more blood/mucus as well. Frequency is around 4-5 per day, so manageable. > > My question is, is this normal when starting the diet? I read on Pecanbread.com that, at least with children, it is normal to experience some changes in BMs as the intestines are undergoing changes. But there is absolutely no mention of this in the book, at least not that I can find, and I'm just wondering if others have experienced this. I'm very hopeful that this diet might provide a natural cure but again just trying to figure out what's going on right now, and if it is safe for me to continue. > > Thank you in advance for you ideas and experiences! > > Peace, > Chris >
