Guest guest
Nope, as I said before, my scrip is for 300mg a day (150mg twice a day), and with your ferritin reading, I think you really need that. But, of course, I'm not a doctor. When are your next labs? Please let us know how it goes. in NJ *********************** > > > I have an email into him about the difference between 100mg a day and 300mg a day. Guest guest
Hey thanks Dave for the feedback on your checkup with the PCP. That Iron info now has me pondering what I am doing as a corrective action. I am just doing one of the ferro sequels per night (in the middle of said night) and wondering if I should kick it to two? Wondering also about my own absorption ability,,,,hmmmmm????? One of the things I have tried to be judicious about in supplementing has been the " metals " because somewhere in the dim recesses of my brain there clangs a warning bell about overdoing that. It is obvious to the casual observer however that I have certainly not been overdoing it re the Iron LOL! Now I must go and research how much is too much, how much is enough and then wet my finger and hoist it to add in the " I am not a normie " factor to relate to how much " I " should be doing. I think however, in the meantime I will up my ferro sequels to two in the nightly yak sessions. I am going to do labs again in just under a month so I will not be sure if it is positively affected or not by upping the dosage since I have been doing one (which is one more than I was) for two months now. That assumes that the numbers will also be up. One question I pose to the wise ones who read here is based on the reactions of two doctors to my latest lab numbers re Iron,,,,,,,,I should post all those I guess,,,,,,,what they have been saying is that your numbers are not bad, etc, your body stil has the capability making enough, etc., and it is from what they are seeing that seems to reassure them. I have not a clue and beyond trying to get my bod out of the Iron gutter have no interest in becoming conversant with the mechanics of bodily iron production,,,,,,,, For reference here are my labs re Iron numbers beginning with the first set after surgery three years ago: UIBC (only done on the last labs in March this year, ref 150-375, my number was 240 Iron Total: (range 25-170) 69,98,122,114,85 Iron Bin Cap (range 200-450) 266,273,272,326,327 Bin Cap & Sat (range 12-57) 26,36,42,36,25 Ferritin (20-380) 233,292,132,26 I know from naught what the meaning of all the tests beyond Ferritin being my store of Iron in the body but something here seems not to alarm the physicians. Hmmmmmmmmmm????? Any ideas from resident experts on how much is too much and what they might be seeing here would be appreciated. In the meantime I will slog my way through researching it myself, it seems to be the only way anything penetrates an extra thick cranium! Dan Slone Surgery 5/2/2000 doctor's visit/iron Went to see my WLS surgeon for the 5-year check-up. He's retiring, so I may not see him again. It was kinda' emotional. He prescribed 2 ferro sequels per day, which is 50mg iron as ferrous fumarate. I told him I already had Niferex, which is 150mg iron as something else, and he said, fine, take two of those. I warned him they were 150mg each and he said, well, you need lots of iron right now. I also mentioned the chelated iron to him, and he said he didn't think it was as good for us for some reason which eludes me now and I didn't understand then. I'll ask again if I get a chance. I have an email into him about the difference between 100mg a day and 300mg a day. Anyone think 300mg of iron is too much? Basically, I think he knows I'll only absorb a certain amount and he wants to see what happens in the next 30 days or so. in Austin RNY April 1998 Homepage: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Graduate-OSSG Unsubscribe: mailto:Graduate-OSSG-unsubscribe

Guest guest
Kate: Thanks for the info......at least I'm probably not poisoning myself. Do you have any symptoms like tiring easily? Has anyone ever gotten better without infusions, with the iron supplements? I really am anxious to turn this train around. Guest guest
, You got a double whammy going here seems to me! Your B12 is scary low, I keep mine above 600 at a min with injections that I give myself. Cheap enough to get and not hard for me to do, makes some squeamish but I needed to do them, the sublingual tabs seemed to work for a while but I kept sliding into the basement with them. The Ferritin storehouse seems almost empty to me. I would be seriously taking myself to a blood doc (hematologist?) and asking about infusions. I give my low Iron stores another month to improve or I will be beating on their doors like crazy. What kind of Iron are you doing, how much, how often, and how much B12 and what form? Dan Slone Surgery 5/2/2000 Re: doctor's visit/iron I am having some huge iron problems also: Here is my labwork i got from the 7th. Guest guest
The Niferex-150 box says Iron (elemental)....150mg. The side says " polysaccharide-iron complex as cell-contracted akaganeite. " Whew. So I don't know if it is sulfate, fumarate, or something else. Does anyone know? The current plan is two a day. I figure there's sometime in the late afternoon where I haven't eaten in over an hour or so....and then again at my middle of the night " tea party. " I'm going to take it with vitamin C and a slug of orange juice. Let's hope I can resist vodka in the orange juice. Then I'm going to get tested in 4 weeks. Will stop whining now and let you all know how it works out. in Austin RNY April 1998 Re: doctor's visit/iron > is it elemental iron at 300 or what? > my iron is 325mg but that converts to just 66elemental and I do ok with it. > > sue >

Guest guest
Fe sulfate is the one that has to be on empty. And it hurts with or without food. Such a deal for the worst iron on the market, too. Guest guest
I've split mine into two doses. In the late afternoon, there's a few minutes where I'm an hour on either side of food. I think the one in the middle of the night, maybe it's the orange juice, has affected my sleep. Sheesh! I may try to move that to early morning. I wonder how badly coffee hurts the iron? I could do it before my coffee. Any ideas? Actually, I think the literature specifically mentions coffee.....back to the drawing board. Maybe two at one time late afternoon. in Austin RNY April 1998 Re: doctor's visit/iron > Fe sulfate is the one that has to be on empty. Guest guest
I can vouch for that! I went through about 10 different OTC iron supps recommended by my original doc (not to mention a small fortune trying them out), and every one made me sick. Then my hero, Dr. Gagner, gave me Niferex...he promised me it wouldn't make me sick, and he didn't lie. in NJ ********************** > Fe sulfate is the one that has to be on empty.
