Hi, welcome to the board!

I'm not sure if you gave us quite enough information here to give you

a complete answer. Has your son only been wearing the shoes 23/7 for

2 months? Typically, it's 3 months full time after the tenotomy.

How old is your son? Is he walking yet?

Here is a link to a post with the standards for wearing the brace (for

most cases) per Dr. Ponseti:

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/nosurgery4clubfoot/message/30939

You can also get to this under the links section on this group's

website.

Going from full-time wear right down to naptime can be disastrous, as

you may have read. It is better to step down the amount of hours

gradually. Additionally, most children shouldn't be at " night time

only " which technically is 10 hours/day I think- until they are

walking full-time.

There is additional bracing information in the files section under the

bracing folder. Also, there is information on bracing, relapses etc.

at this site: http://members.tripod.com/ponseti_links-ivil

I hope this helps! If you don't mind sharing, who is your son's

doctor/hospital?

We look forward to reading updates- and please ask any questions you

might have!

Regards,

& (3-16-00, left clubfoot)

Thank you for your very informative response. My son is 4 1/2 months

old. We began treatment at 3 weeks. He was born with club foot on the

right. He responded very well to everything. His doctor is Dr. Lemke

from Fox Valley Orthopeadic in Geneva, IL I am very pleased with her.

She has been great. He has been wearing the shoes 23/7 for 2 1/2

months. We are now in the weaning down stage. We were told to take

it very slowly. I am looking for any suggestions on how to do this

properly.

Hi there and welcome,

Glad to hear that your little guy has done well with his casts and

23/7 wear! Our little girl also has unilateral right clubfoot.

The link that gave you is to Dr. Ponseti's web site and he

describes how brace wear should be reduced. First to about 18 hrs,

then to 16, then to 14 and finally when walking is well established,

down to 12.

Honestly, I was sooo happy to have Grace out of her brace 23/7 and

was very confident in her correction and we went to about 16 hrs

after our 23/7 (3 mos of this as per protocol) and she was fine. We

then went down to 14 hrs, when she was cruising. She has now been

walking for about 3 mo's or so but I still keep her in her FAB for 13

hrs. And will keep this up for the duration of her brace wear - until

she is 4.

Again welcome and congrats on your son!

My advice is two months is way too soon to wean him down to bed time only! This

is a process over months, lots of months not just two! - from 23 hours to 18 to

16 to 14 hours....

Look in our files for the Ponseti Bracing Protocol for full details.

Help with shoes

My son completed the casting including the snipping of the achilles

ten. He has been wearing his shoes for the past 2 months.

Everythings looks great! We are now at the point of weaning him off

of the shoes except for nighttime. Does anyone have any suggestions

as to how to go about this? What works the best? I have heard

nightmares about this and just want to do what is best for him.

Thank you in advance and for offering this group!!!

Hi - Just wanted to say that we're at a similar stage! is 4

months tomorrow and we too are going to gradually wean her off the

P/M.

She had bilateral clubfeet, and was casted by Dr. Ponseti in Iowa at

3.5 weeks. She had her tenotomy in mid-September.

Dr. Ponseti told us to wear the P/M for:

22hours/day for the first 2 months

and then lower it to 20hours/day for one month,

and then 18hours/day for one month.

After that, he told us she should wear it for 16hours/day.

We have a follow-up appointment with him in January to monitor the

progress.

Good luck!
