Guest guest
Just an update ... I returned to work yesterday, exactly 3 weeks post op ,it actually feels more like 3 months ago.... I made an appt. with my surgeon last Fri. as I am having having brutal searing pain in my chin and lip ....Its weird because I am completley numb to the touch in that area , yet I'm having this relentless nastyass pain .....He said it is the result of the nerves waking up way to early, resulting in me feeling much more pain than I should be having at this point. He gave me a prescription for " amitrypiline " ..It's actually an antidepressant but also works for nerve pain in some people.....So now I still have this burning pain goin on , But I feel so much happier!! lol.... He Said to get back to my normal routine as quickly as I can, so , I went back full time yesterday,... I'm a letter carrier for Canada Post so I probably put in 14 miles of pounding the pavement 1st day back, I'm thinkin I could have used another week off, ....by the time I was done my face swoll up with pain...I couldn't even open my mouth wide enough to get a spoon in there and had to settle for a Mc donalds milk shake ,....so much for nutrition .... Today was a bit better as the mail volume was much lighter....still swelling and pain at the end of the day....I will tough it out..... Next Thursday they are going to sedate me and remove the arch bars that are wired to my teeth ( which are becoming very annoying) I might add....The specialist that is going to recrown all my teeth has already set up an appt for April 25, hope hes just wanting to take a peek,...My mouth is not going to be opening that wide, by then for dental work to begin..... Any how At 3 weeks aside from this burning Lip/chin thing I got going on, I am suprised how well I've healed ,considering 3 weeks ago I was a picture of human misery.... Lots of new members on here since I last posted...Good Luck...after the 1st week Things really do start getting better,a little every day.... Hi sherri ,if I remember correctly...your a week away...Goodluck,..piece a cake Later Bob
Guest guest
Hi Bob, Glad to see you're still around. Sorry to hear about your chin. Sounds pretty nasty. I hope it resolves for you quickly! In the meantime, I'm glad they found a way for you to have a brighter outlook about being in so much pain. There's a approach to take!!! I'm at 3 weeks too. I meet with my OS tomorrow. I think I'm getting more bands. I suspect I won't have my splint out till 3 more weeks after that which sucks, but at the same time, I don't want rush anything. Sigh.... Anyway, are you pleased with your results so far?? Have you posted any pics?? I look pretty much normal at this point, but don't feel as good as I'm looking. I'm tired and worn out! I went back to work part-time last Friday and I think, with my lately weakened and very suseptable immune system, have caught some cold from someone. Bigger sigh. Hope you continue to do well, let us know how everything goes with the archbar removal and meeting with the crown/dental specialist. Guest guest
Hello, Bob: Glad to hear you're bouncing back, and that your doc is trying to get you some relief for that nerve pain. I have suggested before, but only know of one person who's actually tried it, a drug called Neurontin or another called Trileptal. Use of these is what's known as " off-label, " I think; they're also intended as anti-seizure meds, but they can help with nerve pain. I never had any from the jaw surgery, as I was never numb. But I do have peripheral neuropathies, and I had shingles while I was post op. Both of those drugs worked well for me with the neuropathies and the shingles. Or maybe the Amytryptaline will help. Hope so! Is there no way you can work at a physically less demanding position for a bit, or take some more time off? It's not a Good Thing to be doing so much that your mouth is swelling... Good luck with the arch bars. I never had them, and from what I've heard of them overall, I am grateful. There are few things for which I would actually choose to go back into braces, given the option, but jaw surgery is one of them! I hope you'll have an easy time of removal.
