Guest guest
This doesnt sound like a dumping episode to me.. but more like a serious allergic reaction to some ingredient in the small ice cream bars that she consumed.. Guest guest
I think there was some ingredient in the ice cream bars that was either not declared in the contents or in there by mistake. The ingredient was probably bisulfite, a preservative commonly found in crackers and cookies and very allergic to some people (especially asthmatics). My daughter had such a reaction to bisulfite in some snack chips. She now carries an Epipen. RNY 1999
Guest guest
This sounds very much like anaphylaxis. Is your friend allergic to anything? If she's allergic to nuts, peanuts, or soy, that could be the culprit right there since they are commonly accidentally included in ice cream products. It's happened to me, unfortunately, and that's why I ALWAYS have an Epi-Pen handy. BTW, this reaction has absolutely nothing to do with WLS. I had an anaphalytic reaction to ground peanuts in 1989, long before my surgery, and it almost cost me my life. If she does have these allergies, she really MUST wear a Medic-Alert type necklace or bracelet and she must have an epinephrine auto-injector available. It can literally save your life because those allergic reactions can kill you in five minutes or less. Ziobro Open RNY 09/17/01 310/130 Http://tinyurl.com/4e3h allergic reaction Hey all! My friend had a very scary experience tonight. She's 3 yrs post op. She ate one small sized ice cream bar, had a fight with her son, and ate another small sized ice cream bar. 10 minutes after the 2cd ice cream, her lips swelled up, then her face, then she started to itch like crazy, her entire body turned red and her feet swelled up. Her throat got scratchy and started to swell. And she was throwing up. YIKES!!! Talk about scary. She's OK now but she was rushed by ambulance to the hospital. She was treated with IV's and the symptoms subsided. Question has anyone ever had this experience or knows of any post op patient that has had such a severe reaction? The ER doctors don't feel this could be related to being a Post OP but my friend can't help but wonder if maybe it has to do with the way her " plumbing " works now. She's experienced dumping syndrome before but nothing like this. I guess this is a hell of a cure to keep her from ever eating ice cream again. Any feedback would be appreciated.
