Guest guest
The ‘natural spearmint flavor’ renders the B12 spray illegal. Every B12 supplement that I have looked at, sub-lingual and spray, has some illegal sugar, either sorbitol or mannitol. Fortunately (or not), you can self-inject, by syringe, serum B12 intramuscularly. Get your doctor to prescribe (assuming you have a doc) the serum B12 (mine is cyanocobala). Get the nurse to show you how the 1st time. It’s easy – and I am needle shy. The B12 shots made a huge difference for me! Do you know if you are B12 deficient? If not then try the B-Complex by Freeda. I take that B complex daily, and inject 1 cc B12 serum once a month. Carol CD 22 yrs SCD 5 yrs From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of darleneryan@... Guest guest
Carol: Okay, that's what I figured. I don't know for sure that I'm deficient. What I've read on it leads me to believe that it would be wise to supplement it. Here's what I read on Dr. Mercola's site: "The older you get the more your digestive system breaks down, especially if you have been following the standard American diet. Specifically the lining of your stomach gradually loses its ability to produce hydrochloric acid which releases vitamin B 12 from your food. The use of antacids or anti ulcer drugs will also lower your stomach acid secretion and decrease your ability to absorb vitamin B 12. Infection with Helicobactor pylori, a common contributor to stomach ulcers, can also result in vitamin B12 deficiency. However the main cause of vitamin B 12 deficiency is a term researchers call food-cobalamin malabsorption syndrome. Cobalamin is the scientific term for vitamin B12. This typically results when your stomach lining loses its ability to produce intrinsic factor which is a protein that binds to vitamin B12 and allows your body to absorb it at the end of your small intestine." I know I can go to a clinic here and get weekly shots for $5 a shot. How have the B12 shots helped you? More energy? Guest guest
I had about 8 symptoms of B12 deficiency, and some symptoms like hand tingling, imbalance and loss of appetite, were immediately remedied with the 1st shot. I immediately felt better and had more energy. I can’t find the link for B12 deficiency symptoms, but I’m sure you can google it & find some lists of symptoms. I learned just this year that many people with CD do not manufacture Intrinsic Factor & are in fact B12 deficient. I would go & try a shot at the clinic and see how it makes you feel. Could you get a script through the clinic? Guest guest
From Dr. Mercola's site again, out of the 10 or so symptoms I have 9. Balance and loss of appetite as in your case were also mentioned. Also he says that after the age of 50 most people have difficulty absorbing B12. Fortunately, because I am already a patient of this particular doctor who runs the clinic, I don't even need a script for it. I just go in and get it. I would love it if the shots boosted my energy. Guest guest
I think it meant natural spearmint flavor as opposed to imitation.Natural specific name flavor is different than natural flavors, whichI agree could mean anything.Anyway, since it is Dr. Mercola's (IIRC) I am sure you can call up and get moreinfo about it to find out if it is a flavor like an essence or something else. MaraWell, I don’t know for a fact, but I would err on the side of caution as natural flavor could include things like sugar.I agree that essence of spearmint (spearmint oil) is legal. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I’m comparing it to peppermint extract. Here’s what B12 does:From Wikipedia: Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a water soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of blood. It is one of the eight B vitamins. It is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the body, especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also fatty acid synthesis and energy production.More at the link:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin_B12Carol From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of Mara SchiffrenThe ‘natural spearmint flavor’ renders the B12 spray illegal. Guest guest
Hey all, I contacted Dr. Mercola and they said that their main 'sweetener' in the sprays, Vit D and B12 was actually Glycerol, which last I checked was a legal addition to supplements. Just wanted to pass that along, since the sprays are so convenient. I actually use both. Doesn't seem to bother me. jonathan
Guest guest
Darlene, It may be legal. I did a post about B12 on my blog (http://wp.me/p9KPg-je) and within the comment sections a reader told me about this product. I raised suspicion about the " natural spearmint flavor " and she made an inquiry with the maker. She was told that the natural spearmint flavor " is steam distilled from organic spearmint with no additives used in the process. " It would be helpful if someone on this list had experience with making extracts and could tell us if the method above would likely be legal or not. As always, use with care and record your reactions. Cheers, Stocker CD 1983 SCD 1/2005 Asymptomatic 8/2007 http://eatingSCD.com > > I have a B12 spray from Dr. Mercola's website. Guest guest
I've had B12 shots for at least 25 years. At first it was because I couldn't eat any meat, any animal product whatsoever for over 20 years. (Had to have been a big reason why my adrenals are shot). I keep up the shots because I feel better. I use cyanocobalamin though I understand some people prefer methyl-. For me, I get a definite energy boost the day of the shot so I try to time them on a day when I have to go out in the big bad world. I've gone from taking the shots twice a week (or every five days at widest) when I started SCD to closer to every two weeks now. Very nice not to get stuck so often, but they really aren't that bad and if DH didn't give them to me I think I could learn to do it myself rather than have to troop into the doctor's office just for a shot. How have the B12 shots helped you? More energy?
