Actually, I have heard of a few people discuss the spending problem. Giving

it up would only start another addiction, one that could be worse. I have

also heard that Welbuterin helps. It is worth a try.

A girlfriend of mine had this problem for many years, always managing to

eek by after blowing her paycheck/credit cards, etc. Her house and

barns were crammed with tons of " stuff " she didn't need...

She eventually went on Wellbutrin, and it worked for her. For a lot of

us our eating and spending and addictions have to do with serotonin

levels being out of whack! Neurologically challenged :)

Good luck to you, I know how scary it can be realizing you've gone from

one thing to another...

Cross addiction

The biggest problem I have faced since having WLS is cross-

addiction. You don't hear much about this but I was warned by my

surgeon's office that it can happen. Since food is no longer an

option for compulsive eating, we sometimes switch to something else

such as alcohol, pills, sex etc. Believe it or not, my problem is

compulsive spending. Since WLS I have been on one non-stop spending

binge. It is getting pretty bad with credit cards maxed out, a home

equity loan etc. This is so hard to admit but I know I need help or

advice. Since I never found a therapist who could help me with my

compulsive eating, I don't expect there is one who can help with

compulsive spending. And to say just cut up your credit cards is

like saying just push away from the table when you weigh 300 pounds.

So....anybody have any ideas to help me overcome this problem before

my husband divorces me??

No super-good ideas (except stay the heck away from eBay! and only buy clothes

in thrift stores) but we could easily be the charter members for a support group

in western Washington. I'm pretty bad too, though I go in phases.

That,I understand. I have to block the Home Shopping Channel and QVC

from my TV. I can go into Walmart for toothpaste and come out

spending $150.00... money which I don't have. Unfortunately, I had

this problem before surgery too. I always felt that if I had a new

outfit, or fresh new make up, people wouldn't notice I was fat; at

least they wouldn't look at me like a fat " slob " . It's amazing what

our minds do to us.

I know from experience that cutting up the credit cards doesn't

solve the problem. I have found that a combination of things helps with

any addiction. One is to find a good support system. The second is to

be open and honest about the addiction. Seems you are doing both of

these well. I had to become accountable for my spending. For a long

time I went on a cash only basis (no checking account, no savings

accout.) If I didn't have the money I couldn't spend it. I had to get

money orders when I cashed my checks and it helped me budget before I

could spend any of the money. Therapy helped as well as medication.

Like my eating disorder, it took a combination of tools. I hope this

helps.
