I'm on it and I've said that I have the DS and no one has e-mailed me or publically said anything about my surgery choice.... I haven't posted in awhile so perhaps there are newer people on the list who have been vocal about this??? I'm not sure... I do know that the majority (if not all?) the people on this particular post-op pregnancy list have had RNY's. I can assure you that my surgeon has no reservations whatsoever with a post-op DSer having children. Of course, one's labwork, etc. should be good beforehand and one must have an OB/GYN that really understands the need for increased supplementation, etc. and labtests, but he said I shouldn't have any problems at all should I decide to have another child (I already have two, ages 4 1/2 and 2 1/2). I was considering adoption b/c I thought I may encounter problems or risks conceiving again (the surgeon said it should be fine as long as I wait at least 18 months post-op), be at increased risk for hernias, blockages, etc. due to labor/delivery and/or have trouble losing the pregnancy weight. My surgeon said that I shouldn't face any increased risks other than a careful monitoring of my supplementation and bloodwork. I'm not sure if other surgeons are more conservative about this, but I think the DS does offer the pregnant mother with more opportunities to get adequate nutrition for herself and her child. I know this really doesn't help answer your question since I'm not a post-op with experience having a child after DS, but I can assert that this is not an 'increased risky' or 'potentially dangerous' situation when one gets proper medical aftercare. all the best, lap ds with gallbladder removal January 25, 2001 Dr. Gagner/mt. I swear...some people just have to make sure they put the next person down so they can feel good about themselves. The last laugh is on them...in 10 years...you'll still most likely have your weight off....the odds are not favorable for the RNY....LOL ~*~ AJ ~*~ Age 37 5'8'' Post op 7/24/01 Open BPD/DS self pay - Dr Baltasar -Alcoy Spain 07/24/01 BMI 64 415.1 08/06/01 BMI 59 390.2 -24.9 lbs! 08/16/01 BMI 58 387.0 -27.9 lbs! 08/24/01 BMI 58 386.5 -28.6 lbs! Guest guest
, You said the right thing, hun! I somehow got on another list where all they talk about is vomitting and how they love being punished for their choice with dumping and so on......I can not believe what I am reading. This is so different from the other RNY lists I have been on in the past.......and, of course, very different in terms of quality of life that you and I so enjoy with the DS...... I guess all you can do is ignore them......they believe what has been thrown at them without doing their research and there isnt much you can do for them after the fact. Best to leave them be and move on...... Hugs, Judie
Guest guest
On the same note, I have been going to a wls support group and everyone there who had surgery had rny. They always try to talk me out of it!!! It is driving me crazy! I have never tried to talk anyone out of the rny but every time I explain my choice, its like they cant see the diffrence... Guest guest
One of the things I have found interesting in watching the posts on another ossg list I'm on is this: someone was asking about menstruation after WLS and those who had RNYs said their period either disappeared or became very scant/irregular after the surgery, where I've seen those who had the DS say that their period had normalized after surgery to the point you could set a clock by it. It just drove home yet again that I had picked the right surgery - not necessarily because I want to have children, but because I perceive having a normalized period as being more healthy than not. -Sherry (Lake Marcel, WA) BPD/DS Feb. 2, 2001 self-pay 5'5 " / 304 pounds / 34 years old Lost 9 pounds in pre-op weight loss efforts Have lost 107 pounds since surgery!
