I love Food Network, and actually I think it's a great opportunity for

post-ops to learn to really COOK. So many of us got where we were because we

lived on prepared foods -- fast food, bags of chips, crackers, general crap.

Not all of us, but a lot of us. When I see Emeril or one of the other great

chefs do something totally innovative (to me) with vegetables or with meat,

I get ideas that I can use in my kitchen. I do WAY more home cooking now

than I did pre-op. No more Hamburger Helper around here. Now I have to find

ways to make a meal for 5 that everyone will like, and I will be able to

enjoy too.

I use more seasonings and find new ways to flavor things for variety.

Then again, I'm totally hooked on Trading Spaces and While You Were Out --

the idea of a complete make-over of a room in two days is SO COOL! (My mom

was an interior decorator -- she would love this!)

Anyway, I'm a TV junkie too, when I'm not being a kitchen junkie.

I personally don't have cable or anything like it so I don't normally

watch these kinds of shows unless it is on the PBS station. My one

exception is the cooking shows that are on Oprah. I actually learn a lot

from watching some of the cooking shows. One chef came on Oprah recently

and stated that he had to modify his cooking when he discovered his

daughter had juvenile diabetes (she takes insulin). Most of his cooking

was with milks, creams, fats, and sugars. He decided to start learning

healthier techniques. One of the things he started doing was a corn

chowder. He would make a corn juice in his food processor. When cooked,

the corn juice would thicken itself eliminating the need for flour, milk,

and cornstarch. This would never have occurred to me but makes perfect

sense. I don't generally use recipes for anything more then ideas so I

can generally watch shows and improvise.
