Since we don't absorb fat, our cholesterol goes down dramatically. Guest guest
Cholesterol anyone? > I'm curious about something: I have high-ish cholesterol and triglicerides > and low HDLs. All bad stuff for heart disease risk factors. There are two types of high-cholesterol problems: the kind I have, and the kind you probably have. Both are postively affected by weight loss. My chol problem is genetic -- my mother has very high cholesterol, and she's on the thin side and eats non-fat everything. My cholesterol levels are 325 (unmedicated), and my triglycerides are also high. While I'm hoping that losing 100-125 lbs will " cure " most of the problem, there's a chance that I'll still have to take some cholesterol-lowering meds for life. At least it'd be at a lower dose! The kind of cholesterol problem you probably have is the kind that can be corrected by diet and exercise. Lose the weight and exercise, and it's my educated guess that your ch olesterol problem will disappear! alyssa
Guest guest
Alyssa, Is it possible that the genetic part of your cholesterol problem can come from eating low fat foods? (like your mom) it must be a rare problem??? Judie
Guest guest
I don't think so. As I understand it, my liver just looooves to make cholesterol. That's w hy it doesn't *entirely* matter what I eat. I have noticed that if I eat a lot of eggs, my chol levels DO go up, but I don't eat eggs much. It's somewhat rare to have such high cholesterol from solely a genetic link. Lucky me! alyssa Re: Cholesterol anyone? > Alyssa, > Is it possible that the genetic part of your cholesterol problem can come > from eating low fat foods? Guest guest
Alyssa, I dont know much about it and I certainly am no expert but our livers make cholesterol even if we dont eat foods containing cholesterol or fats, right? And according to Dr Atkins......cholesterol is not a bad thing....its only bad when it comes from the bad sources (like processed foods) and not from eggs or animal sources. Or does this only apply to those with no genetic cholesterol problems? Judie
Guest guest
Judie & Hawkins, There is contraversy regarding the cause of high blood cholesterol which. Everyone agrees that high blood cholesterol is BAD. The question is what causes high blood cholesterol. Many have assumed that eating foods with cholesterol cause high blood cholesterol, but this is not necessarily the case. Others claim eating saturated fats cause high blood cholesterol. Atkins claims that it is realated to eating sugars along with fats and not from eating fats alone. Of course if the liver produces it then there is not much you can do. The BPD procedure dramatically lowers cholesterol INDEPENDENT of weight loss. A group of patients in Italy who were moderately overweight were given an BPD procedure without any gastric restriction. The result was only modest weight loss, but dramatic improvement in lipids and blood sugar levels. Also, patients who have BPD or BPD/DS show dramatic drops in cholesterol and blood sugar levels even BEFORE significant weight loss. The data is clear that the malabsorptive procedures are the most effective and eliminating lipud disorders and diabetes.
