Guest guest
Carol, The person recommending 1200cal/day is basically recommending a diet. 1000-1200cal/day is what I've read in the medical literature as " low-calorie-diet " ...the official term. The average is that a person needs 10cal/day/pound to *maintain* weight (i.e., not lose or gain). There is a slight variation between the sexes. The 10cal/day/lb assumes there is no exercise involved. It also assumes there is little variation in metabolism! A 1200cal/day diet with no exercise is, on average, enough to maintain 120lbs. However, I know a few 120-pounders who eat more than 1200cal/day and don't exercise. I also know people who are 250+lbs and don't eat 2500cal/day. After surgery, I think we're limited to about 400-800/day due to the stomach size. I agree...it is very confusing. Chin up! - > someone told me I should stay under 1200 calories a day. > This is all so confusing. > Carol L
Guest guest
Carol L............ We do not count calories after surgery By the time a DSer is a year out he should be eating 2500 calories a day and only absorbing HALF of that! Half of that is 1250 calories! This is why you dont need to count calories! Judie

Yes, in the beginning but by the time you are 4 months out you are going to be eating more and by 6 months and 9 months ALOT more! I repeat.......we do NOT count calories, ever! once you get the surgery your calorie counting days are over!! I eat approx 2200 a day and do NOT excersize and Im only 20 lbs to goal!!! That, my friends, is the DS!!!!! Hugs, Judie
Guest guest
Carol, I do not count calories. If i did I know it is a whole lot more than 1200 calories. I had this surgery to escape from that nightmare. I eat what I want when I want it. I keep in mind two things thought, eat my protein and take my supplements everyday. Other than that I am a bad, bad girl! If anyone could have out eaten this surgery it would have been me. I eat candy, donuts, whatever comes down the pike, I snack on cheese, nuts, potato chips. The DS does for me what I could not do for myself. It works, I have lost over 100 pounds in 7 months and I am a 12/14. This may not work for you, and it is best to not eat sweets, but I am just a weak willed person (a skinny weak-willed person lol) Teri > right now I would estimate I eat around 2200 calories a day > Judie > Is this the norm? someone told me I should stay under 1200 calories a > day. This is all so confusing. > Carol L
