Getting on as a sub in my area was so easy it's frightening who they might let

in a room full of kids. Thing was, it didn't even amount to minimum wage, like

$35 a day here. I also kept requesting grade school but assigned to high

school, which I hated. High school kids can really suck, no offense....but a

whole room full of kids acting like jerks all day for less than $4.50 an hour

just wasn't my cup of tea.

Eventually I found a job on a construction site, so I traded teen age jerks for

grown up men in hard hats...(jerks!haha)... but at least the pay was

considerably higher so I didn't mind near as much! LOL!

Actually construction is something to consider - I got on at a big job-site as a

Purchasing Agent / Site Office Manager. Lots of managerial work involved

running the purchases, time keeping, pay checks, etc. and interesting work too,

dealing with everyone from the grunt laborers to the Federal Inspectors. I

easily spent 50 to 100,000 of company money per month making

purchases....finding the suppliers, wheeling and dealing for the best prices and

delivery. I just mean it's a job where you'd be surprised how many of your

skills would cross over to work beautifully there. We had lots of out of town

workers I'd have to find housing for, too, and pay those bills, arrange

transportation, per-diems, all that stuff.

In bigger areas there's probably a lot of big construction going on. Sometimes

I would sub in the corporate office too and actually got to trade my steel toe

boots for real shoes on those days.

There was a lot to be said for being one of 3 women on site (the other two were

heavy machinery operators)...I never had to check my own oil; if my roof leaked

I had volunteers to come to my house to fix it...it helped a lot considering I

was a single mom at the time. (Funny what a smile and a cold beer can still buy

a girl these days.)

Also the job-boss was real busy so he would send me off on lots of his

personal errands which were fun - take his credit card and go shopping for his

girlfriend a birthday present, or deliver his dog to the groomer; wash his

truck; once it was icy so he gave me his 4x4 truck to chaufer his mother around

for a day of Christmas shopping so she wouldn't have a wreck. All this on the

clock, mind you :D Although no pressure not to wreck his truck with his mother

on board! Aaahhh! That would have been a disaster. Some people said that was

descriminitory of him, but I said what the heck long as the pay checks didn't

bounce. I knew which side my bread was being buttered on. The same guy who

hired me could sure fire me and I didn't see any huge issue with doing his

errands when he asked (and paid) me to.

In bad weather I usually worked while the actual construction crew was off for

the day; the money stayed steady.

In any event, I guess it sounds a tad bit sleezy but the money was really good

and the work was not gross at all.

has anyone considered substitute teaching or becoming a teacher's assistant?

I used to do that for a while. You can pick which days you want to work, plus

no nights or weekends, if that's what you're looking for. The only reason I

don't do that anymore is because I now work are a private instrumental music

instructor in the local public school. I still get to make up my schedule.

Anyway, it's just a thought. Most towns are always looking for subs.

We will find something soon. Keep plugging away!

I've never heard of it either. It's hard though looking for a job through the

internet. There is no first impression, no chance to win them over with your

charm :-). Nothing, just a piece of paper sent through the internet that they

I'm beginning to think how the heck I ever got my first job!!! :-)

Don't worry! The right job is waiting for you. Are you thinking about

putting your picture on your resume also? I am curious about that..never

heard of it before.

LOL.. Thanks for the input. I almost felt like I was reading a short story and

was really getting into it... For some reason it made me lol. I hadn't thought

about that route, it's something to consider. And, I agree, if you're paying me

I'll run your errands all day! Get's you out behind the desk. Did you find any

good dates? You have some pretty good odds.
