Hi ,

Here is the information that I received about the s when I contacted

them.

I hope this helps.

The shipping she quoted me is $35 to Canada if that gives you some idea. Of

course it would be less to ship within the US.

Take care,

Halley

Subsequent pairs of shoes are $264.00 without the brace/bar. We would also

need a new impression for subsequent orders. The rate of replacement

depends on the growth rate of your child. We typically allow room for

growth. I can enclose an invoice with your impression kit and you can

either include a check when you return it or you may pay with a credit card

and provide the information when you return the impression kit.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions before I send the

kit.

Thank You,

I'm sure this has been posted before, but I was curious how much the

s cost the first time around (impression kit, shoes and bar).

Aleksander has some red marks on the tops of both of his feet that

don't seem to go away. They are starting to get worse, and after

going to Gillette to see ATD and have adjustments made, we're thinking

perhaps we may try the s. Aleksander isn't complaining yet,

but I'd prefer not to get to that point if we can avoid it.

Our insurance will cover them at 80% like they do the Markells, but

I'm curious what the difference will be. Right now, I think we only

pay around $15 for the Markells. I'm quite sure the s will be

more, but I'd like to be mentally prepared for how much more!

Thanks.

Thanks!

I hate to admit this, but I sort of hope we have to get them. It

seems like they'd be so much easier to put on, and then maybe

could put the shoes on once and a while!

We never had the Markells, as Dr Ponseti sent us home with one of the

swedish made braces. THAT brace was the easiest in the world to put

on!!! All 3 velcro straps took less than 2 seconds to put on

's little feet, even when squirming!! lol We got the

s in January and they aren't easy to put on, per se. The

straps are long and get tangled up in his little foot, and like Kori

said, they're a PITA to get flat so there's no chance of sores, etc,

but I LOVE them!! adjusted to them very quickly, and

although the little bugger still isn't sleeping for me all night

through, he's a very happy camper and doesn't complain about the

shoes at all!

I was also shocked to actually receive a check from Blue Cross for

reimbursement without having to call and fight them!! It was even

more than I anticipated, which was a nice surprise! They even

reimbursed 80% for the impression kit!!! yippeee

We paid $264 for the shoes, $86 for the bar, $22 for the impression

kit, and $10 for shipping. Jean did say that after the first of the

year shipping cost would be increasing, but didn't tell me how much.

In addition to those costs, we paid $13.85 to overnight the kit back

to them. Well worth it, in my opinion. We have read soooo many

stories of people having troubles with the Markells and just didn't

even want to take the chance. Figured since we can afford to do it

at this time, we should. May not be able to later, but at least

while he's such a young infant we won't have to worry so much about

pain, sores, and proper fit!!

Just my two cents' worth

I guess I figure I will be able to check my husbands work better if

we have the s.

I've tried loosening the straps, but that hasn't helped with the

marks. One of them did look like another day of pressure would rub

it raw. Thats why we went back to Gillette on Monday to get padding

put on the tongue, and they increased the bar length. We've also

been leaving him out of shoes all day. He prefers being barefoot

anyway, and daycare likes it too. They keep their house super warm,

so we don't have to worry about cold feet over there.

I wish I could see the s firsthand to make a better

decision. It's great to see pictures, but it is totally different to

hold them in your hands and see how they work, KWIM?

I figured it would be around $75 too, but it also depends on how much

Gillette marks them up. Thats the piece of the puzzle I'm missing.

Aleksander has gone thru 3 pairs of Markells in the year he's been in

the shoes. He tends to need them replaced before his toes reach the

end of the shoe. He gets really cranky with me when they get too

small. But, I also get them pretty big so they last longer.

Hopefully we'll be able to keep getting 4 months out of each pair.

But like you said, the money would be worth it if he's more

compfortable.

Plus, we weren't even charged for Aleksander's first 2 pairs of

shoes. They completely forgot! I wasn't about to point out that

mistake!

I'm in complete shock about this...$575 a piece, and your cut for the first

(two?) was over $300.00?! For the Markells?! They should be ashamed! Do you

think it is because the doctor is doing the billing himself? We didn't pay

anything when was in the Markells, but we used to get a copy of what

the insurance said that they would cover, and they (the insurance co.) were

only billed $70.00 for the shoes and bar. Something doesn't sound right...

Our Hanger Orthotics charged $245.00 for our set of Markells with the gold bar,

non adjustable. Fortunately, insurance did pay for them since she only wore

them for 24 hours and is now in the s, which we had to pay for.

Oh my! I wasn't looking at this thread either - since I never had the

s. But I just saw this. I think we paid like $40 for the bar and

$70 for the shoes. Or the other way around maybe? Our shoe store isn't

perfect, and even though they say " everyone deals with the special shoes "

we know that only one guy is " the expert " - and the truth is the tips

document from this site is better than his advice anyway. But he did call

our doctor to discuss the 70 degree angle. And most importantly, they

didn't charge us ridiculously for the shoes and bar. I never did submit to

insurance. There's only so much I can deal with the insurance company - it

would be (of course) out of network, they'd decide (I'm sure) that the

shoes were only worth half as much and that we have to pay 20% anyway so I

just never bothered. It's enough that I have to call them to explain to

them that a follow up visit for club feet doesn't require authorization

(especially considering the previous 6 visits with the same doctor didn't

need authorization).

Yes when I take off the shoes in the morning there are red marks, but they

go away pretty quickly and we've never had blisters or sores. I did punch

extra holes in the straps to make them tighter.

- Seth

(meir, lcf, 1/29/04, dbb 12/7 - yes, the Markells and we're quite happy

with them)

Let me clarify that that price included the brace not the bar. I

posted pics of the one leg contraption on the CPics site. Though I

wouldn't think the brace should have been too much more. AND they

didn't get a new brace when he changed sizes just moved it to the

new Markell's. Our part of the AFO was $90 also. Ridiculous.

Yes, that whole experience was horrible.

I haven't seen anything from bcbs from his new dr about the newest

Markells. I am anxious to see what makup he will have.

That is completely insane! Before insurance, the Markells were

102.50 on my invoice.

If I were you, I'd call the insurance company and make sure the

places you are getting the shoes from are in network (if that is a

part of your plan).

Forgive me, but HOLY CRAP ! They totally ripped you off!!

People are moaning about price gouging at the gas pump but now this,

THIS is price gouging. I wonder if there is someone you can complain

to about that? Better Business Bureau? Attorney General? What the

heck are they thinking?

Seriously! It would be cheaper to order them from the Markell

website!

Here i was expecting the 's to be $750 or $1000 bc everyone

talked about how much more $ they are. It's all relative, huh? :-)

(That isn't to downplay the expense of anyone's shoes, bc we know it

all adds up quickly, esp if insurance won't pay any.)

Yep, now that I found this site, I know better.

I pity and feel much sorrow for all the parents dealing with this

alone without the resources of u guys or the internet even at all.

All the cf babies at our new drs are on welfare(the ones I have

seen/heard there when I am), and I just think of all I have learned

from my research and ability to have internet access. Makes me very

thankful, even when it is hard.

Okay, now I see that included that leg contraption. I guess most

places charge pretty much whatever they want for the stuff they make

in house. Most places charge around $1000 for " custom made " AFO's,

when we all know that it costs them literally $10 for the materials.

So it does not suprise me that they charged you that much for that

brace they rigged up. Does your insurance give you a breakdown of how

much they charged for the shoe and how much for the funky brace?
