My son just started wearing his helmet last week. It's rubbing his

forehead alot. At his one week follow up, it was rubbing so bad that

there was a sore on his head and a bunch of the skin peeled in that

area. We were told to keep it off until it healed. We put it back on

him yesterday and it was still rubbing... now in a different spot. We

ahd it adjusted again this morning, but it still is leaving a BIG red

spot! Obviously, we don't want him to stop wearing it, but we don't

want him to be in pain because of it either. Does anybody have any

suggestions to help stop the rubbing?

Thanks

-Noel

If you're getting red spots you'll need the ortho to make an

adjustment. If the ortho is experienced he/she should be able to fix

the problem. In a few cases the fix is to make a new band (usually

because it didn't fit properly at the begining).

Noel,You can also ask your ortho to put a piece of moleskin in the band if it keeps irritating the same spot. Imagine a receiving blanket type material with adhesive on the back. The same thing happened to my daughter and she's had the moleskin (they change it each visit) for 8 weeks now.Good luck!Sandymom to Lyla - 8 months (8 weeks in DocBand)and Owen 4 help with a new helmet?!?

There is a type of sticker that your ortho can put in that is very

smooth so it cuts down on the friction. However, the best thing to

do is to get that rubbing part of the helmet ground down. A well-

fitted helmet should not create lasting red spots at all. Sometimes

it takes a few adjustments to get it right at the beginning, but just

keep going back if you see any spots. BTW, very large red spots are

often heat marks and nothing to worry about. You should leave the

helmet off and see if goes away in a half hour. It's usually the

smaller, very bright red and welty-looking spots that are problems.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sandy,

Using the moleskin was the best advice ever! The rubbing on his

forehead stopped! I am going to tell the tech about your suggestion

at our appointment next week. He's given us the advice of other

parents in dealing with a variety of things. I'm sure he'll pass your

advice on.

BTW... the tech is the one who suggested this group to us. with

Hanger in town, WV has been helpful and reassuring throughout

the process.

Glad you found some relief for him! Some babies just have HIGHLY sensitive skin and that moleskin seems to save the day every time! I think they hesitate to put it on because it needs to be replaced weekly and can't be cleaned with alcohol, so there's more chance of sticky stuff getting in the way I suppose. Take care,Sandy help with a new helmet?!?
