Re: OT - Gift for Daycare Provider

When my kids were in private daycare, which was one lady and only 4 kids total,

we gave her approx $150.00 for Christmas. It was a lot, but we loved her dearly

like she was part of the family.

Now my kids are in a public daycare center. There are 2 teachers in each

room, so I got them each one of those gourmet chocolate covered apples. I think

they were about $10.00 each. I didn't want to spend too much since I was buying

4 gifts total.

HTH!

I was wondering if anyone tipped their daycare providers around this

time of year, or if you give any gifts to them?

I will be looking it up online too, but thought I'd check here.

We love our daycare, and would really like to give them something to

show our appreciation of the exceptional care they give Aleksander.

Any ideas would be fantastic!

Thanks.

We have an in-home day care provider (my kiddos go to her house). When Jake was

first born I checked around with my friends, and what they said was to give a

week's pay as a Christmas gift. What I've done in the past is find a small gift

and then write a check for the rest, to total what we pay her for a week (in our

case, $100). I have no clue if that's what the rest of the world does lol but

it works for us. Our babysitter has watched the kids for 3 years now and has

been very flexible with us as far as all of Jake's medical issues (she has been

very willing to take care of him while he's casted, after he's come out of a

cast and isn't as mobile as usual, and has also helped with potty training both

kids!) as well as scheduling issues, so we think she's worth it. :)

PS- I agree with , if your kids are in a daycare center where you have

several providers, a small gift would be in order imo rather than paying out a

week's pay to each of them. Who could afford that?

Thanks! We can't afford a full week of pay, but thought half a week

would be reasonable.

Do you know if they have to report that in for tax purposes?

Aleksander goes to a home daycare across the street from our house.

Grace and her husband are licensed, and have about 8-10 kids

that they take care of.

Grace was a teacher in Jamaica (before they came to the US quite a

while ago), and just finished college (Business degree). We

absolutely love them, as does Aleksander, and want to show that

appreciation as best as possible.

If we gave them cash, do they have to report it? If so, we thought a

gift card may be better since they won't have to report that. I

thought perhaps a gift card to a nice restaurant, Target, Whole Foods

(they buy organic only), and Noble, or something like that.

We have given them organic tomatoes and pumpkins from our garden, and

they really seemed to enjoy that.

I'm planning on giving them a few homemade treats with the cash or

gift card. I'll be baking all day tomorrow and can bring over warm

stuff when I pick Aleksander up.

$100.00 a week? Man, where do you live? That is cheap, assuming it's

full-time!

When we lived near DC, we paid $225.00 per week, per child. It was like

having another mortgage.

I'm home with my kids, but for the 3 of them to be in a center for 30 hours a

week, it's

$650!!! (We're outside Chicago.)

Happy Holidays!!

I know! I thought our's was reasonable at $155 for an infant! We

live in Minneapolis, so that is really reasonable. I have friends

paying over $200/week who aren't even happy with the care their child

receives.

$100 for daycare is very very reasonable, especially if you are getting good

care. Here in Michigan, its about $150 for an infant.

LOL no, not full time! I work 2nd shift so the kids are at day care about 3 hrs

a day, 3 days a week. $100 is still quite a deal though since if I went with a

day care center, we'd still have to pay for full-time.

Then, after all of that, I forgot to say...I'm not sure how holiday gifts figure

in as far as taxes. My husband says he doesn't think you'd have to pay taxes on

a gift but he's not sure either. A gift card of some sort would solve that

problem. :) Oh, and this year I haven't been able to finish 's gift (I

was going to make our day care provider a scarf because she LOVES them), so

she'll be getting a plate of Christmas cookies and a check. :)

That's kind of the boat I'm in...the job market in this little area we live in

is so limited that if I took a job here I'd put it all back out to day care plus

all the hassell unless i drive two hours a day, then I'd put it all in to

daycare AND gas.

I think a gift card to a book store is great, I'd be in heaven! :) I'm sure

what ever you decide though they will know you did it with love.

If we end up having twins next time we get pregnant, my husband is

going to try to get licensed for home daycare! He works with

developmentally disabled adults right now and I work in Marketing so

I'm the breadwinner of the family. We couldn't afford daycare for

three kids, especially not with 2 of them as infants. Yikes!

Good thing I bring home the bacon here...I'm not cut out to stay at

home full-time. I admire those who can so much! But work is my

sanity break!
