Yep, I ended up with a thyroid that was the size of a grapefruit-- and because it was so huge, it was also producing way too much thyroid hormone. I was 12 when it started acted up, and by the time I was 18- I had it removed. I don't have the report-- but I do believe that it was full of sarcoid granulomas-- my G.P's kept me on prednisone, solu-medrol 7 day packs, etc literally for years as I have always had constant sinus infections.

It may be a cyst, or a simple goiter-- an nothing to worry about. The biopsy isn't painful, and it can really tell them which path to take you down. Getting your thyroid issues under control makes life a whole lot easier. I'm in the process of getting mine rebalanced-- we had to change from regular Armour Thyroid to one of the synthetics. It takes about months to really get it balanced out, but my depression issues are not as bad, and I'm hoping that we can get some of the exhaustion tackled with the changes.

I had an ultrsound last week on my throat area (thyroid area lump) and got the results today. Dr. said there was a nodule that was half firm and half liquid and now wants to biopsy (fine needle aspiration)to check for cancer. Has anyone had anything similar? If so what can I expect? Thanks!

First you should know that almost 95% of all Thyroid growths are benign, there is very little chance of this being malignant. Men and those over 70 and under 20 also have a higher chance of being malignant. You should be fine. If they are doing a Fine Needle Biopsy then it's a fairly easy procedure. It's done a lot in Doctor's office's although sometimes it is done out patient. If the nodule is palpable (we can feel it) they normally don't have to do it with ultrasound it can be felt by the Doctor and done with the other hand. What they'll do it (some will put ice or a spray over the area to decrease the pain of the local) is inject a local anesthetic, most of the time Lidocaine (it's just like Novacaine when you go to a dentist) If you have a good Doctor this may sting or be painless, most people think this is the most painful part and it's normally completely painless. They will then put a "VERY" thin needle into the area and go in 2-4 times usually about 3 to get out what they need. This depending on the Doctor is mostly painless. They then put a band aid on the area, most apply pressure for about 15-20 minutes and then most people are back at work within an hour or less, some take the day off. Then you just wait for the path report which will be normal. So relax everything will be fine. If you have any other questions or are unsure about any part of the procedure just let me know.

Mitch, thanks for the reply. I do feel a little better now. Just worry about my coughing while they are probing with the needle.

Don't worry about the coughing. It will be over before you know it and even with a bit of coughing you'll be fine and there should be little or no pain. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

That's not an average case. there are times where they will decide to take out the thyroid (and their are meds that can be given that do the same thing) but chances are because this is a small nodule it will not happen. Even if G-d forbid it does they will be fine
