Some time ago, I had surgery upon my wrist and was hospitalized. I

received post-op morphine shots to ease the pain but they caused nausea

and wretching. I would not like to imagine that after gastro surgery.

Since Mt. Sinai doesn't seem to offer the epidural, I wonder if the pump

will cause the same discomfort. Any thoughts?

That was my fear and Dr Welker said I react to morphine that way becuz my

system cant handle it so thats one reason we went with the epidural.......I

hated the sick feeling with the morphine so I understand where you are

coming from!

There are several different drugs they can use in the PCA pump.

Morphine is one, Dilaudid another and Demerol another. I would let

them know that Morphine has made you sick in the past so that they

can either try another drug or give you something with the Morphine

to prevent nausea.

nancy: If you have had this experience with morphine, perhaps ask the

surgeon what other IV pain meds are available? I know they do a Demerol pump

(that stuff does absolutely NOTHING for me, bTW) and perhaps have other

alternate meds that you could try...

I didn't experience any nausea, vomiting, etc. after surgery and I had the

morphine pump. It took quite a bit to finally calm my stomach spasms but it

worked. LOL So, my reaction wasn't negative. I would worry that, if I had

this negative reaction with morphine before that I may experience it again.

YOu certainly wouldn't want nausea or vomiting after the DS -- ouch!

See if there's other meds that the surgeon would recommend that would be

better and more effective for you. :)

I just spent seven days in the hospital having a knee replacement. I

had a cpa or little button thing that supplied a prescribed amount of

morphine on demand. I was fine for 3 days and then spent 24 hours of

the most grueling nausea I have ever experienced on the fourth day.

I don't know why it took me three days to react to the morphine, but

it did. Knowing this, I will be discusing post operative meds very

carefully with my doctor. I never want to go through that again, and

especially after abdominal surgery. I know that toredol also makes

me sick, from a prior surgery, so now, I guess the option would be

demerol.

I can't remember what the name of it was but I believe that Richmond

doesn't use morphine at all.
