,I would have to agree with Alyssa. If you are interested, the book/coobook Nourishing Traditions would definitely be a good place to start if one wanted to use grains and starches in the diet again.AmeliaTo: BTVC-SCD Sent: Mon, March 15, 2010 8:06:23 AMSubject: Your opinion please

I know SCD is a healthy diet for those with GI problems. But I also know it is just a healthy diet overall. So since I have been learning that grains are actually hard to digest and not really meant for human consumption, I am wondering about the part of SCD where, after healing, it says that one can TRY to test any illegal foods to see if they can tolerate it.

But what I am wondering is:

1. is that just to appease those who cannot fathom not being able to eat their customary foods or just to allow some fun and leeway

or

2. is it that after healing occurs, the body WILL be able to digest these foods better.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Yes.

My repertoire of legal foods has expanded significantly from my early

days. One of these days, I hope to be able to have some dark beer again,

and maybe steal a few of my husband's onion strings when we eat at a

particular restaurant. I don't, for the most part, miss wheat bread. But

dang, those onion strings look good!

(BTW, for those who look at the fact that I'm nine years SCD and say,

" Oh, she can't have anything even NOW... " well, I have other

issues besides the gut that SCD is good for, and, among other things, I'm

eating the healthiest diet I know until WELL after I'm declared cancer

free!)

I feel so much better in general on SCD. I was a healthy eater before- never did

the SAD, but also ate on the run a lot. Now I have to cook healthy food for

myself and in a way, my diet has expanded so much on SCD since I could not have

some of my habitual foods. I never ate home made yogurt and soups before- now I

have to.

Mt wish: to travel and eat out and at friends' houses without having to be so

careful about illegals. Maybe the occasional really unhealthy Starbucks with

lots of cream...maybe some day. For the most part I don't miss much. I have also

learned so much about nutrition since starting SCD.

Don't think of it as a diet, but a lifestyle. Hope that one day you can

occasionally splurge, but really going back to bad habits won't do anyone any

good.

If I have to eat SCD forever, I won't mind. But my 2 non-SCD goals are to:

1. Add cocoa to my SCD baked goods (I'll try after 3 years of SCD)

2. Once a month eat a non-SCD treat (I'll try at maybe 5 years SCD)

That would be enough to make me happy!

Have to say, cocoa is the big one for me too. Maybe there is something to that

whole " addictive " thing...That and coffee. I have been craving coffee like

nobody's business lately. No more chocolate cake images appearing in my head

every five seconds, thank god, but with being tired oh how yummy a cup of

diluted coffee and honey would be.

How long have people waited before adding coffee back in? I know it's legal in a

diluted form, but my naturopath tells me it is abrasive to the digestive tract.

precisely 0 minutes. If anything negative minutes.

BTW, cocoa butter really goes a long way in helping take care of

the cocoa longing.

Oh Alyssa, how you tempt me. My hubby tempts me with those foods regularly.

Well, I suppose I tempt myself for making things for him with them regularly!

LOL Mara! It was something like negative hours for me :) I actually gave it up

for the 5 days that I did the intro... then I fell right off the wagon...

I am in my 11th month of SCD. I tried to add coffee in after about 4 months and

it was not a good idea so I cut it out.

My (grown) daughter came to visit last week and I made coffee for her, and after

smelling it... could not resist and drank some- with no problem (yay).

I drank a little while she was here, but stopped. I don't want to rock the boat.

Just being able to drink it was such a treat. I could do a cup in the morning.

Also for the first time- I can eat a raw apple- peeled. I recently am able to

eat raw pineapple and some salad now, which is new for me. (small amounts)

It is best to go slowly on SCD.

Keep in mind that if you're craving chocolate, it may be because you are

low on magnesium.

I'll have to repeat my tale of carrots and chocolate for the

newcomers.
